Would this be (one of) the last operational scheduled air services to use the DC3 in the world or are there others?

Theres an outfit in Colombia that still flies them into the bush. There was a documentary about them on Al Jazheera last year. The daredevil pilots of ColombiaThe blurb from Youtube: A tribute to those who have the similar experience! Pilots fly through storms over the jungle along one of the most perilous air routes in the world to deliver supplies. It is one of the most perilous air routes in the world. Colombian pilots fly through storms in decrepit planes over dense forests to deliver food and goods to villagers isolated from the rest of the world. Jumping off point is Villavicencio, a city in the foothills of the Andean Cordillera. The destination is any one of the number of native Indian villages scattered throughout the jungle, cut off from civilisation. The plane's arrival in the villages is a major event. It stops here only once or twice a month, its cargo comprising vegetables, beds, dogs, chicken, TV sets. In Colombia, DC3s operate more like rural buses. Somewhere over Colombia, high above the Amazonian rainforest near the borders with Brazil, an old DC3 prop plane is caught in a violent tropical storm. No visibility. Radio silence. Undoubtedly flight 30-37 is in trouble. Captain Raul tries to stabilise the twin-engine plane to bypass the worst of the storm.

Would this be (one of) the last operational scheduled air services to use the DC3 in the world or are there others? Nope, Buffalo Airways in Canada NWT is one of the last scheduled DC-3 operators. They run a DC-3 daily between Hayriver and Yellowknife NWT. You seriously need to watch "Ice Pilots"C-46..DC-3..DC-4..CL-215..The best reality TV show with only a smidge of crap so its interesting for TV.Do yourself a favour and watch some episodes on youtube.

Ice Pilots is one of my all-time fave shows. I've managed to record around 8 or 10 of them since I got MySky and I just lap it up. Young guys, old planes. Great stuff. Buffalo had one of their 3's at Oshkosh in 2010 for the mass DC3 75th anniversary.

Thanks for the kind words. Indeed - that is the much-talked-about MA60 in the background, the RTA Queenair A3-CIA (now painted red/gold trim) and the RTA Islander, A3-PAS, also now with mottled red painted tail.

Hi Brendan Great shots indeed, and information. Re the RTA Islander A3-PAS, do you happen to have anymore information on this aircraft, i.e. previous identity or construction number?
Thanks Mike

I notice brendenodell used the past-tense in relation to Chathams Pacific Ltd. If the airline is no-longer in existence, can anyone advise -AWP's current whereabouts? Is she still flying for Air Chathams,or, if not.....?
Thanks.

AWP is still with Air Chathams and is currently in Tongatapu awaiting a ferry flight back to NZ. The aircraft is still airworthy, it has just exchanged regos from A3_AWP to ZK-AWP. Note that those Air Chathams titles on her upper fuselage have just been painted on, it was titled Chathams Pacific until very recently.
Craig Emeny intends to ferry AWP in December and initial plans are to base her at Mangere (last I heard back in early November).

All true, to clarify - Chathams Pacific was a Tongan subsidiary (and is now defunct) of Air Chathams ( the parent company). The aircraft has been owned by Air Chathams in New Zealand since Craig first bought it a couple of years back. :-)

What does the name mean, does anyone know? My understanding is that NAC named their DC3 airliners after NZ birds. Powhaitere is the Maori name for sub-species of red-crowned parakeet found on the Kermadec islands, the Three Kings islands, the Auckland islands, and on the Chatham islands.
