V For Victory in 2011by Blair Ensor - Marlborough Express Last updated 13:00 05/04/2010S Allied Forces will unleash a ferocious assault on the Axis Powers at next year's sixth Classic Fighters Airshow. The 2011 event is themed V for Victory and will focus on the second half of World War II as Allied forces take up the fight from the motherland, England. The event will take place at the Omaka Aerodrome from April 22 to 24 next year. Airshow chairman Graham Orphan said he was "over the moon" with the way the event was coming together. "If all goes to plan we will have a dream lineup." He revealed three of the major aircraft to star at the show: A de Havilland Mosquito, a Focke-Wulf Fw190A-8 and a Avro Anson MK1. Mr Orphan said it would be the first time a Mosquito fighter bomber had flown in the world in about 15 years. The aircraft had been restored in Auckland for its US owner and would make its world airshow debut at the show. The Focke-Wulf, a prolific fighter plane for the Luftwaffe, was not seen in the air after World War II until a replica aircraft was flown in July 2004, said Mr Orphan. The same aircraft will feature at next year's show. The Avro Anson, a bomber trainer and maritime patrol aircraft used by Allied Forces in World War II, would also make its debut at the show, he said. Mr Orphan remained tight-lipped about some of the battles that would be staged at the event, but there were still several exciting announcements to come. In 2009 the Italian-themed airshow attracted about 32,000 people, but next year he said he would be surprised if numbers did not exceed 40,000. If people are interested in volunteering their help to the show they can contact the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre on 035791305 www.stuff.co.nz/marlborough-express/news/3547877/V-for-Victory-in-2011

Considering the aircraft we already have on the circuit combined with what will hopefully be joining it soon, we're definately in for one hell of an airshow. Alongside the Mosquito and Anson we have the prospect of two Mustangs and two Spitfires on the Allied side. The Fw190 will likely be joined by the Me108. It looks like it might be NZ's best airshow ever.
We have to hope the restorations are all completed in time of course.

Have Avspec started working on the Spitfire Mk14? I heard the engine had been sent to the States for an over haul

Have Avspec started working on the Spitfire Mk14? I heard the engine had been sent to the States for an over haul I had a lengthy conversation with Graham Orphan at Wanaka about this and many other subjects. The gist of which is that the mk14 isn't a priority for the show.. and the middle of, if not later next year is a far more realistic target time for finishing.

Wow that sounds awesome. Might be a good time to visit my cousin. www.classicfighters.co.nz/I knew a chap who was a Mossie Pilot from Turangi, even shot down a JU-88 I think it was. There is also one being restored in Melbourne, beautiful plane.

That reminds me....I've gotta book the accommodation this coming week.
We can apply for NZ Railway Welfare Society Trust holiday apartments six calendar months before we plan to occupy them and they are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. I'll have the usual crowd (including some kids) with me at Classic Fighters and we'll be chasing our usual apartment in Picton. We generally improve our chances of getting the accommodation by applying to occupy it several days before we're actually planning to occupy it (they're cheap, so it doesn't matter paying for a few nights when we aren't going to use it). The idea is to apply to occupy it several days before the school holidays begin, then you get the jump on everyone else. It has worked well in the past when we have been attending Classic Fighters.
Fingers crossed!

My Gold Pass arrived in the post on Wednesday. I'm excited already... I purchased a stack of Gold Passes (seven of them) at Warbirds over Wanaka earlier this year. They had them on sale (the passes had actually been printed) so I jumped in and purchased them for myself and the friends I attend Classic Fighter with. Just over six months to go!
