WELCOME TO TRUST HOUSE WINGS OVER WAIRARAPA 2011With just over six months to go, things are really gearing up for next January’s Trust House Wings Over Wairarapa air show. The show will take place at Hood Aerodrome in Masterton on 21-23 January 2011, and true to this year’s theme “We Will Remember” will celebrate not only the aircraft but also the men and women who shaped the history of aviation, making it a tribute show not to be missed. BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE – WE’RE NOW A THREE DAY SHOW.For the first time Wings Over Wairarapa will be run over three days with Friday January 21 being the show’s Official Practice Day. Discounted ticket prices are available with gates open from 12 midday until 7.00 p.m. AND FOR ALL VETERANS OF WW2.The executive have decided to recognize all Veterans of WW2 by welcoming them into the SVAS enclosure which will enable them to enjoy the company of other ex-servicemen and women, and at the same time be close to the action as aircraft of both World Wars perform in front of them. All that is required is that they purchase entry tickets to the show and apply for individual name tags which will secure them good parking and access to the enclosure once through the gate. We repeat that this year this facility is offered not only to ex Air Force Veterans, but to those Veterans of all the services during the Second World War. On the night of Friday 21st January, there will be a Veterans’ Dinner at the Copthorne Hotel. This will be a great opportunity for us to enjoy perhaps a last reunion. Of those who enjoyed the fellowship at the Wings Over Wairarapa, 2009, there are at least four who will not be with us this time. Sadly one of those who the organisers will miss most is Peter Norman, who was the long serving Patron of the organization and who passed away a few weeks ago. TICKET PURCHASEYou are requested to purchase tickets through Tikitek at your closest outlet to relieve the pressure on gate sales. The prices are as under: Adults Practice Day $15 One Day Sat. or Sun. $35 (Gate Sales $45) Two days Sat. & Sun. $60 TO RECEIVE YOUR VETERAN’S PASS:Apply by letter, phone, or Email to: Reg Wellington Phone: 07 346 2922 18B Ruihi Street Rotorua 3010 Email: poneke@ihug.co.nzACCOMMODATION:Because of the demand from local and overseas guests, accommodation is filling rapidly and motels are not accepting bookings for less than 3 nights, as this is Wellington Provincial Anniversary Weekend. If you have friends or relatives living in the Wairarapa, now might be the time to court favour. THE 2011 WINGS OVER WAIRARAPA TEAM

TRUST HOUSE WINGS OVER WAIRARAPA 2011 SEPTEMBER 2010 NEWSLETTER Well its now only four months to go and counting and things are really gearing up at Trust House Wings Over Wairarapa HQ! DISPLAY AIRCRAFT Check out the Display Aircraft page on our website for recent announcements of aircraft that you will see at 2011 show. One of the features of Wings Over Wairarapa has always been the huge variety of aircraft that you can see there and believe me 2011 will be no exception. From the world renown Vintage Aviator Collection (the largest privately owned collection of WWI aircraft in the world!) and the heavy metal of the WWII aircraft to the adrenalin inspiring agricultural and solo aerobatic displays – there will be something for everyone! One of things that we are particularly looking forward is that for the first time in a number of years, two Supermarine Spitfires will appear at a New Zealand airshow. Doug Brooker's rare two seat tr.IX and Brendon Deere's mk.IX. While Brendon's Spitfire has made a number of appearances around New Zealand, this will be the first appearance by Doug's at a large event, something enthusiasts from all over the country have been looking forward to. Another thing to look out for will be the Jet displays. While Jets have always been a part of the airshow with Vampires and an L-39 in the past, for the 2011 airshow, not only will the Vampires be back, there will also be one of their younger brothers taking part. A Venom will appear for the first time in New Zealand skies for a very long time PLUS not just one L-39, but a number of them flying as a formation team. Keep an eye on our website for further announcements! TRADE SITES We have an unprecedented amount of interest in our trade sites this year however we still have lots of options available. If you are interested in further information about trade sites contact us at info@wings.org.nz. NICE NEIGHBOURS!! One of the great bonus’ we have in the Wairarapa is our proximity to Wellington. With virtually unlimited accommodation options available in the Capital in January and a designated air show train to and from there on both the Saturday and Sunday of the show visitors can combine the attractions of one of New Zealand’s most exciting cities with the thrill of the air show. For further information about Wellington and all it has to offer visit www.wellingtonnz.com or visit www.houseoftravel.co.nz for details on Wellington based domestic packages. MERCHANDISE Our new range of merchandise, developed in conjunction with our good friends and neighbours at Tui Brewery, is available through our website. Check out what all well dressed air show patrons will be wearing this year - my personal favourite is the “THEY USED ME FOR THE ACTION SCENES IN TOP GUN – YEAH RIGHT!” tee shirt! KIRRA HOLIDAYS Kirra Holidays has recently announced a 12 day tour starting in Auckland and meandering its way through the many scenic highlights on the North Island before finishing at Wings Over Wairarapa. For further information visit www.kirratours.co.nz REMEMBER OUR FACEBOOK PAGE For those of you who have not yet discovered out FaceBook page check it out at www.facebook.com/WOWairshow and make sure you sign up as a friend to catch up with the regular updates of photos from previous shows, and more frequent news updates about the show. Make sure that you tell your friends about it also! When you join you will notice that we are running a series of competitions through our FaceBook page with our first winner being Sean Joyce, who won a copy of the Historic Film Aviation Units book 'On The Wings Of History' just by registering as a friend - all you have to do to be in the draw is to join up! Please do let us know (email: info@wings.org.nz) if there is any specific information about the show that you require; if not watch this space for regular newsletters and show updates and we look forward to seeing you in January! Cheers THE 2011 WINGS OVER WAIRARAPA TEAM!

I sadly never got to see Mark in person, however I did meet Ray at Wanaka 04 (he and the other Breitling Fighters pilots signed a book for me :-D major highlight of the weekend for me!) and see him fly at CF2005. If only I had been born ten years earlier...
And yes, three will be wonderful! Wanaka '012 I think....

Speaking of the Hanna's I think their best display was at the 1996 Wanaka show with Ray flying the Spitfire MK XVI and Mark flying the Bf 109G that was brought out here for that show.A truely unforgettable display.

Here is a message from Alex Mitchell:
The Red Checkers will make their first 2011 airshow appearance at Wings over Wairarapa and everybody on the committee can't wait.
The Cessna reunion is still happening – at this stage there is something like 90 aircraft coming!!! Due to these very large numbers, the logistics of getting them all up and then back on the ground has forced the cancellation of the proposed massed flypast. There will still be handling displays and of course all of the attending aircraft will be parked on the airfield.

TRUST HOUSE WINGS OVER WAIRARAPA 2011 NOVEMBER 2010 November is here and summer finally feels as if it might be also which at Trust House Wings Over Wairarapa HQ means that its all go! DISPLAY AIRCRAFT UPDATE Make sure that you keep an eye on our website for recent announcements of aircraft that you will see at 2011 show. One of the features of Wings Over Wairarapa has always been the huge variety of aircraft that you can see there and believe me 2011 will be no exception. RNZAF Wings Over Wairarapa are always pleased to have a large presence from the RNZAF and Wings 2011 will be no different, with most if not all RNZAF types attending. Always a crowd favourite, The Red Checkers will make their first airshow appearance in almost a year. Will they have a new signature move? The Bell UH-1H Iroquois will be appearing, maybe for the last time as this type is due to be replaced after many years of sterling service. The distinctive ‘whoop whoop’ of the Iroquois rotor blades will be missed! Kiwi Blue will appear in the skies above as always. One of the displays not to be missed is the RNZAF's Historic Flights Harvard, its solo display is always impressive. Plus make time to go down to their encampment at the end of the flightline near the Military Mules. The RNZAF personnel are always willing to talk to you and show you around, it's a must do for all the kids at the airshow. A first for the airshow will be a Boeing 757 based out of Ohakea displaying, a must see for all of the big jet fans. Plus of course the RNZAF's workhorse, the C-130. Due to operational requirements, the type attending could change at the last minute, but rest assured that both the RNZAF and Wings Over Wairarapa do everything we can to ensure the largest RNZAF turnout possible. YAK RACE After the success of the race last time, the spectacle of air racing will again return to the skies above Hood Aerodrome when the Yak-52's race for the first place prize. A huge success with the crowds as the Yak swooped in high speed to start the race and then raced around the markers passing and re passing each other. While air racing is common overseas, it's relatively unknown here with only a few races having been held around New Zealand. So why not come along and see what all the excitement is about? HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE! There are a very limited number of corporate hospitality enclosures still available on the flight line if you want to really knock the socks of your clients or colleagues!! A very generous 6m x 12 m area complete with your own marquee and outdoor seating area for up to 30 people could be all yours for the weekend. For further information please contact Liz Pollock at info@wings.org.nz CHILDRENS ENTERTAINMENT Again there will be a great selection of children’s entertainment available at the show. The smaller members of your party might like to have a go on the giant waterslide or maybe do a circuit in a dodgem or perhaps enjoy the slightly slower pace of the miniature Ferris wheel. Either way there is fun for the whole family at Wings. By way of a tip you might like to keep an eye out for a stray pilot or two on the water slide -I’ve been hearing rumours! SOCIAL CLUBS / GROUP DISCOUNTS Discounts for groups of 20 people or more are available for all ticket types through Ticketek. This might be the perfect opportunity for your work or sporting social club to organise a day out. Or maybe a summer get together with friends from afar? Either way get a group together and enjoy the show for less! IT’S A RIPPA DEAL FROM ACROSS THE TASMAN Grand Pacific Tours has announced a RIPPA DEAL for anyone booking one of their 7 or 12 day Wings Over Wairarapa tours receives a prize package to the value of $200. For further information see the Latest News page on our website or visit www.grandpacifictours.com REMEMBER OUR FACEBOOK PAGE For those of you who have not yet discovered out FaceBook page check it out at www.facebook.com/WOWairshow and make sure you sign up as a friend to catch up with the regular updates of photos from previous shows, and more frequent news updates about the show. Make sure that you tell your friends about it also! FACEBOOK PHOTO COMPETITION. Through our Facebook page, we are holding a photo competition. To enter send up to five photos, (sized to 800 pixels wide and no more than 600 pixels high) from previous Wings Over Wairarapa airshows to wings.comp@gmail.com. The photos will be put into a gallery on Facebook and after the closing date of the 19th of November, our judge will pick a couple of winners. The prize will be a double pass to the 2011 airshow and will be announced in our next newsletter. Please do let us know (email: info@wings.org.nz) if there is any specific information about the show that you require; if not watch this space for regular newsletters and show updates and we look forward to seeing you in January! I sadly never got to see Mark in person, My brother and I got to chinwag with Mark at the end of one of the Warbirds over Wanaka airshows. It was the airshow where they first flew the I-16s. We were in the Gold Pass enclosure and Mark was in the adjacent VIP enclosure when the show ended on the Sunday. We wandered up to the fence and started talking to him and had quite a conversation over about ten minutes. I asked him why his father wasn't flying one of the I-16s and Mark said it was because his father wasn't too keen on flying them after seeing the dodgy landings everyone else was experiencing with them. Mark reckoned the I-16 scared the crap out of him on landing. By the next Warbirds over Wanaka airshow, Ray was flying an I-16 and Mark was sadly no more. Like his father, Mark was very approachable and seemed to take a genuine interest in talking to strangers about flying classic aeroplanes.

I've just booked tickets for the Wings Over Wairarapa airshow. My wife was due to be down in Wellington on business the week before so I'm bringing the whole fan-damily down to meet up with her on the Friday and we're taking the excursion train to Masterton for the Saturday show. Should be a good weekend...

TRUST HOUSE WINGS OVER WAIRARAPA 2011 DECEMBER 2010 NEARLY THERE! There is a rumour going around that Santa is considering a last minute upgrade of the sleigh this year. Around this office we leaning towards his final choice being a Spitfire or possibly the Christmas red of the Venom will sway him. Then again being the traditional sort of guy that he is he’ll possibly stick with one of the WWI classic aircraft. Either way if you miss him tomorrow night rest assured that you will see all those and countless more fantastic aircraft at next month’s Wings Over Wairarapa air show. Some of the other highlights will include: ME108B Reappearing in the skies over Wairarapa is New Zealand’s only WW2 Axis aircraft, the ME108B. Looking similar to it's fighter brother, the BF109, the 108B was built as a four seater touring aircraft. This example is a post war French built example renamed as a Nord 1002, but it wears the paint scheme of a WW2 liaison aircraft. It's always a crowd favourite, both on the ground and during the aerial battles with Allied aircraft, the crackling from it's gas guns, it's ability to turn inside the other aircraft and finally it's smoky departure as the Allied aircraft eventually wins the day. SNEAK PREVIEW In a departure from previous air shows, as you will be aware Wings Over Wairarapa is now a three day airshow, with Friday now an Official Practice Day. While there won’t be a fixed flying programme during the afternoon from 5-00pm to 7-00pm there will be a WW1 flying display featuring the aircraft of The Vintage Aviator, which are based at Hood Aerodrome. The famous WW1 fighters, SE5a's, Camel, Fokker Triplanes and more. So why not take an extra day and come and see us on Friday as well and soak up the atmosphere as the airshow starts to wind up WOTIF YOU NEED ACCOMMODATION! Wot about a fly by weekend to Wings of Wairarapa while enjoying all that Wellington, the coolest little capital in the world, has to offer at the same time by commuting each day on the air show train? Book accommodation with Wotif.com and you may just manoeuvre a great deal from $85*. But hurry, accommodation is soaring away! For more information visit www.wotif.com TRAIN TICKETS If you are basing yourself in Wellington why not avoid the traffic and sit back and enjoy travelling to the show on the daily air show train service leaving Wellington each morning 8.30am and returning you by 7.20pm that evening. You can purchase your air show train tickets along with your show tickets through all Ticketek retail outlets, by phoning 0800 TICKETEK or online through www.ticketek.co.nz. There will be STRICTLY LIMITED tickets only available from the Tranz Metro ticket office at Wellington Railway station on the day. OUR NEIGHBOURS FROM ACROSS THE DUTCH! We are delighted with the huge interest from people travelling from Australia for the show. We are very much looking forward to extending some good old fashioned Wairarapa hospitality to our visitors and promise you a truly unique show. For those of you that maybe interested in including it in with a wider tour there are still limited places left on both the Grand Pacific Tours (www.grandpacifictours.com) and Kirra Holdiay (www.kirratours.co.nz) tours out of Australia to Wings but you need to be quick! IN THE AIR AND ON THE GROUND While a lot of the excitement of the show is in the air there will also be just as much to see on the ground. One of the really exciting sites at the show will feature the Hulme Supercar. Named in honour of New Zealand's only Formula One World Champion, Denny Hulme, the Hulme Supercar concept is a high performance mid-engined road car that gives the excitement of driving a Formula One car on the road. Not only does this car look fantastic but you will also get to see it going through its paces during the lunchtime break and that’s something not to be missed! Other static displays will feature the old favourite stationary and traction engines, model aircraft, Segways rides and children’s entertainment – and that’s before you even get to the food and wine marquee!! The vintage military static display area will have a whole new look this year with a Reinactors Camp being a central feature. There will also be a German half track, a Scorpian and a Lloyd tank and a modern day ex Army Hummer - the kids will love this one! Rides will be available on a number of the vehicles so there will be something for the whole family! STOCKING FILLERS And for those of you who, like me, are leaving even thinking about Christmas shopping until tomorrow remember Wings Over Wairarapa tickets are on sale through all Ticketek retail outlets, by phoning 0800 TICKETEK or on line through www.ticketek.co.nz – too easy! REMEMBER OUR FACEBOOK PAGE For those of you who have not yet discovered out Facebook page check it out at www.facebook.com/WOWairshow and make sure you sign up as a friend to catch up with the regular updates of photos from previous shows, and more frequent news updates about the show. However he arrives at your house I hope that Santa is kind and that you have a fantastic and safe Christmas. Best wishes from all of us. THE 2011 WINGS OVER WAIRARAPA TEAM!
