From another forum for those who are interested, there was just an accident which involving the Venom, Weather was not the best, rain was just setting in,It was on its final approach for landing, coming in low.. way too low, must of miss judged the end of the runway and the rear landing gear clipped the end of the runway (the South end of the run way drop off a little bank about 1.5-2m drop). it slid down the runway 150-200m. no fire or anything like that luckily. Not a good start to the air show at all, don't think there will be much more action tonight. I was watching from the other end of the runway, but had the impression the aircraft was still on its feet. I didn't see any ambulances or other medical vehicles in attendance so hopefully damage is to the aircraft only. Have pics of the aftermath but will post as per Dave's discretion.

** IMPORTANT PLEASE READ **
At the request of Karen Luff (Venom owners wife), could anyone who has pictures of the incident happening please PM me.I have pictures of the Venoms incident in progress, but I will leave it to Daves discretion as weather or not I post them. This is what I saw occur.................. The Vampire, L-39 and Venom arrived in a rain shower and did a pass overhead before breaking to land, line astern suitably spaced for runway 06. The Vampire came in first and about 50m past the crosswind runway the port main tyre burst and the Vampire pulled left off the runway, coming to a stop just clear of the seal. This in turn caused the L-39 to pull up short. I turned 'round just in time to see the main gear on the Venom collapse at the far end of the runway and it slid on its belly for approx 150-200m. To clear the runway approximately 1/2 an hour later the Venom was pulled clear of the runway to the grass on the eastern side on its belly by a tractor. As I was leaving the Venom was being loaded onto a flatbed truck by Hiab. I will sort through my other photos and post some soon.

I note the METAR (auto station) are pretty gnarly with east to southeast winds at 5-10kts and overcast with showers, heavy at times. The airshow tower was notifying most aircraft that the automated METAR was playing up, and were giving their own met.

Saw pics on Facebook, doesn't look too bad but I guess damage never does from afar. Sad news for the show.

I hope John and the Venom are ok! Very sad to hear the latest incident with not only this machine but the local Vampire also! Good luck to the owners for speedy recoveries for themselves and their machines :-)

Also, just spotted at the WoW website that there is to be a Hughes 500 double act - would someone be able to take photos of the machines and their display please? :-)

Marcus, please feel free to post photos so long as Mr and Mrs Luff are ok with that. I guess the incident was pretty public and will no doubt be in the newspapers tomorrow so I guess it makes little difference posting photos here. Can you please confirm that the pilots are ok?
Brett, thanks for posting those photos. I guess it's lucky it was not worse than just the ruined tyre.
Other airshow photos would be most welcome too.

From what I could tell, Brett Emeny (flying the Venom) was okay. I will apologise now for the quality, my camera did not like the conditions, it is only a point-and-shoot. The Approach (foreshortened by zoom lens). The Vampire running off the runway after the blow out. Where the Vampire stopped. The L-39 after pulling up short, but still on the runway. Then BANG, 1st hurried shot. To me, it looks like the Venom is on the ground before the runway starts. Sliding. 1. 2. 3. Stopped. Being dragged off the runway. Getting ready to be lifted onto the truck. An unhappy ending to the day. Thanks to those who have been in touch.

Phew, that's sad to see but thanks for posting the Venom shots, and thanks Sam for some very good other shots. Did the Venom's main wheels retract or break off?
The weather conditions look a lot less than ideal for an airshow, I'm glad I didn't make to long trek down there to be disappointed by weather (again). It's hosing down here at the moment too and I believe this storm is heading down the country. I guess the WWI stuff won't come out if it's raining?
Is there a bit of crosswind in that P-40E take off sequence?

Its sad to see the Venom on her lovely red belly, but the first photo of the Roaring Forties brought a smile to my face. Well done Brett for keeping damage to a minimum, and who was flying RVM? Good work and kudos for taking it off the runway. The weather looks atrocious, you can barely see the Albatros in the approach pics.
Looks like a TON of C180/185 variants on the flightline! Great stuff! I hope there will be photos of any formations, oh to hear that!
Any Fletchers part of the display? Can anyone down there give us an update of the weather? My boss was surprised to see me this morning, "thought you'd pull a sickie and go down to Masterton!".

Targets for the airfield attack I expect.

Here is something completely different from an earlier airshow at Hood Aerodrome in 1950.
Check out all of those de Havilland Mosquitos! mp.natlib.govt.nz/detail/?id=52424

So, is it hosing down there, like it is here all day? I hope not.

So, is it hosing down there, like it is here all day? I hope not. It's a grey day in Wairarapa and a wee bit drizzly at times, but mostly fine in a cloudy sort of way. I worked this morning driving a passenger train over to Wellington and back (it wasn't the airshow train, but the normal scheduled service). I passed the airshow train heading the other way at Manor Park and I heard the driver call up train control as he departed Upper Hutt to say he had a passenger count of 485 onboard through the Rimutaka Tunnel. I was hauling a seven-car train (instead of the usual weekend five cars) and we departed Upper Hutt on the way back with about another 130 passengers heading to the airshow in addition to our normal weekend passenger count (the fleet of Tranzit buses that met the earlier airshow train had returned to Masterton railway station to uplift any airshow patrons from the usual scheduled train). From Carterton north, I could see plenty of aeroplanes in the sky and it has been very obvious all afternoon there is a big airshow on with lots of noisy toys passing over my place. I've got tomorrow off (I took a day's leave) and will be at Hood when the gates open at 8:30 tomorrow morning to stake out a posy on the crowdline with seven folding chairs, with friends setting out from Wellington early — they should get there 30-45 minutes after I set-up the spot up for us.

Man that is sad news, I managed to see the venom airborne when I was around and about in mastercity, but 2 jets 'down'! And it seems everytime I am around the spitty's break down, I haven't seen one there since I was about 18!
EDIT: which of the twin boom jets was flying today, I thought I saw one (along with dozens of harvards and a couple of kittyhawks)
