Hi all, a brief intro. I moved to NZ in '95 from England, first to Hamilton and then to Upper Hutt where I am now. I served my apprenticeship with British Aerospace, initially on Buccaneer and Phantom servicing and then moving to Harriers where I built wings and tailplanes and also repair / servicing. Left Brit Aero in '89 to start a motorcycle restoration business which I ran until a particularly nasty racing accident with a wall in Isle of Man indirectly led to a lifestyle re-evaluation and the move out here. While working at BAe I started flying gliders but gave away when I started racing. I love anything old and mechanical and am looking at getting back into some form of aviation related employment in near future. Ideally something involving old aircraft, I'm currently employed as a workshop foreman.

Feel free to ask away, no doubt I shall be doing the same as I am not really 'up' on a lot of NZ aviation history. My big memories from England are being taken by my dad on back of motorbike to watch Lightnings taking off from RAF Leconfield in early '70s, I would have been maybe 7 or 8ish. We also got Lightnings, Phantoms, Buccaneers and Vulcans flying over the village to either North Sea patrols or to the offshore bombing range. I had 2 cousins in RAF and also an uncle who was ex RAF and Royal Observer Corps.

Welcome aboard Stephen. (Do you go by that or Steve?) As far as tailwheel time something like a Cub would start you off well being relatively easy to fly giving you time to concentrate on the landing/take off phase.

Either or is good with me. The tricky part is finding somewhere that has a cub (around Akl). Thats something to worry about once I get my PPL and some more hours under my belt first.

Welcome Hugh! There are a few young folk along on here. Some doing training with the RNZAF and sharing their experiences at times too. Yes, getting along to Ardmore at the Open Days is a great opportunity to see and hear the older aircraft - and sometimes the jets as well, get up and running. Keep up your school work, in particular your maths and even geography if at some stage you venture into flying. Get some after school jobs and earn some money, set some goals and achieve them

Hi, I saw Dave's post on "Short Stirling & RAF Bomber Command Forum" and came across to look at this site. I'm Kerry Barnes and have been researching my uncle's crew from their time on 467/463 Squadrons. His Lancaster was shot down on 3/3/45 during a raid on the Dortmund/ Ems Canal at Ladbergen. I've set up my website www.anzacsons.com to remember the five crew members who lost their lives that night. The site includes the stories of other crew members from their tour with 467/463 as well as my wife's uncle who perished on the Burma railway. While his crew in Bomber Command was made up of RAAF, RAF and RCAF personnel, his crew from his first tour on 150 Squadron in North Africa had RNZAF crew members that I'm now trying to trace so that I can add their stories to the website.
