Welcome Ross, You sound very much like the young fellow from down there that gave me a hand to load some wings onto a trailer about 3 or 4 years ago. You were getting about in a wingless microlight (taxiing) back then so you have certainly had a head start in the business. You must have met a huge number of the South Island aviators over the years also. The strip there is seeing some action these days.

Welcome along Ross, it sounds like you are way ahead of most of us on here for sports flying or PPL and that you have had time in a glider as well - well done. Plenty to keep you interested here and please find a way to post photos from down there, we love to see some aviation action on our screens - there are hints around for posting photos from Photobucket or Flickr etc...

Hi Ross, You sound like the knowledgable young fellow I met when I called in at Rangitata Island airstrip last Saturday. We discussed the Flea and the Tiger Moth restoration. Welcome.

Talking of younger members and out of the way strips got me thinking of an earlier thread we had running here. rnzaf.proboards.com/thread/13178/introducing-younger-generationOnce upon a time we could all wander around our local provincial or town airfield. Kids just don't get the same exposure these days. You have security fences and grumpy old men to contend with these days. Little wonder we don't see many of the younger ones showing an interest. ooops..

I see he hasn't been on line here for nearly two years. Shame.

I think he was the youngster in Nelson and he may have encountered one of the old grumpies here. I feel a little bad about it now that he no longer about but some of these guys really need to harden up and get up off the proverbial. Guys that need spoon feeding are never going to make it in the mob and although flying schools will take their money off anyone some guys need to learn. It is pointless cycling past 2 or 3 flying clubs every week on your way to ATC and then getting on a forum and asking questions about rates and the likes. Perhaps that is the problem. They don't cycle.... mum drives them to and fro. !
Those very hangars used to have youngsters hanging around cleaning aircraft and doing all sorts. Getting to know people and going for rides etc. It is the wannabes and the dreamers that can't get off the keyboard. Perhaps your man has come good and is flying in some out of the way place, like Arusha. Ditching the computer in the process.

Hi All
I'm Simon Brooke
I'm 61, retired, and live in Dunfermline, Scotland.
I've been an aircraft enthusiast - spotter and photographer - since 1964, when I started at the age of 10. civil, military, big or small - I'm happy to watch and photograph them all.
I must admit, however, that my favourite aircraft are those from my earlier years.... I was brought up in Jersey, and went - from the age of 10 - to boarding school in England, travelling on Dakotas from Jersey to Southampton. When the Southampton runway was upgraded from grass to tarmac, I was upgraded to Dart Heralds and Viscounts. My first jet flight was on a British United BAC One-Eleven in 1966. Whilst at school, I was in the Air Training Corps and flew, maybe once per term, in RAF Chipmunks. The ATC also allowed me to fly on a Royal Air Force Andover, a Britannia and a Hercules.
Most of my working life has been spent in aviation, a significant part with Air Atlantique where I flew many times as loadie in Dakotas and DC-6s and, on several occasions, in the mighty Bristol 170.
My boarding school was in Bath, not far from RAF Colerne, and I can still recall the retirement fly-past of the Hastings - thirty-odd in Hastings formation - a never-to-be-forgotten sight!
Since then, I've also flown - as a fare-paying passenger - in a Sandringham, a Dragon Rapide, and a Devon - amongst many others.
I've visited NZ twice - once in 2010 for a couple of days in Auckland on a round-the-world trip in 2010 and again in 2013 for a fortnight when we visited as many airfields and museums as we could manage in two weeks.
best wishes Simon

suthg.......
Thks for the welcome. Pleased to hear you were able to visit Solent Sky, indeed an excellent museum. It is a while since I was there, my abiding memory is sitting in the cockpit of the Sunderland chatting to a volunteer at the museum who had flown them (suspect it may have been Vic Hodgkinson, did not ask his name). Trust you fitted in visits to a few more museums while you were on these shores? I visited NZ in 1996, would love be down your way again.

Welcome Bill. That's pretty neat bringing your own aircraft to fly round New Zealand! I'm sure you will get a few comments on places to visit while you are here. Can you tell us where you are planning to go? I presume Auckland as well as Wellington. One of the biggest(if not the biggest) aircraft collections in Auckland is MOTAT (Museum of Transport and Technology). Not just aircraft of course. The TVAL WW1 aircraft collection is near Masterton. In the South Island we have the Omaka Historical Aircraft collection near Blenheim, our Air Force Museum here in Christchurch, Ashburton Aviation Museum and for all things DeHavilland there is Mandeville near Gore almost right down the bottom of the island. I've just skimmed the aircraft side of things there are also a lot of homebuilders here in NZ.

Thanks for the welcome and good information, baz62. We plan to clear customs in Auckland coming in from Rarotonga. We'll tour around the North Island for a couple of weeks. We're scheduled to take an 11 day flying tour in the South Island with Flyinn New Zealand, www.flyinn.co.nz/ starting on January 19. Other than that, we're still pretty open on our itinerary. We'd like to see and participate in aviation activities, museums, visit homebuilders, etc but we'd also like to take time to enjoy the great natural beauty that you have in New Zealand. Bill

Welcome aboard Bill! I met you at Hamilton on the evening of your arrival during the world record trip. Glad you are coming back for a visit. Summer in New Zealand has lots of aviation things happening, so I'm sure we'll see you around. It sounds like you'll just miss the Sport Aircraft association (our equivalent of EAA) national fly in at Hastings (Hawkes Bay) which is 19-21st February, but I'll extend an invitation to that anyway. I'm sure you'll thoroughly enjoy your time here.
