Hi all, we now have loads of members from around the world, and lots more non-members breezing in for a regular check of the forums. There are really only a small proportion of these who regularly post here, some members have never made posts and most haven't filled in their profile yet.
I reckon we shouldn't stand on ceremony. We're all friendly here. It would be nice if everyone could introduce themselves a little- you may make some new friends and good contacts. And this will be good for newcomers to read about the other members.
I thought maybe if I post a questionnaire you could copy it, paste it into a new post, and then give your own individual answers. If you don't want to answer particular questions, simply write N/A for no answer...
Here goes
What's your name?
Where are you from?
How old are you?
What is your main interest in aviation? Is it historic? Airlines? Military...
Tell us about your background in aviation. Are you just an enthusiast or have you got more hands on experience? Are you a pilot? Do you have an Air Force Background? Or a civil aviation background?
Do you belong to any aviation groups, like the NZ Warbirds, RNZAF Association, Royal Aeronautical Society or CAF, etc?
Are you an aircraft modeller? (Scale or R/C)
What are your favourite aviation books?
What are your favourite aviation films or TV programmes?
Do you frequent other aviation forums?
Have you any comments or suggestions for this forum, to hopefully improve your own personal usage and enjoyment on the forum?

OK, I'll kick this off then. What's your name? Dave Homewood (I don't use a false handle, some people do for the sake of remaining anonymous but it'd be nice to know your first name at least)Where are you from? Cambridge, New ZealandHow old are you? 34What is your main interest in aviation? Is it historic? Airlines? Military... My main interest is historic aviation, particularly NZ military and NZ civil history. I love the airshow scene but so infrequently get along to shows these days. I also love reading and writing history, recording stories of airmen and airwomen and researching, etc. As an ex-RNZAF chap I also like to keep abreast of current military happenings in NZTell us about your background in aviation. Are you just an enthusiast or have you got more hands on experience? Are you a pilot? Do you have an Air Force Background? Or a civil aviation background? I was a Safety and Surface Worker in the RNZAF from 1989-93. Since then my only involvement has been in recording history of aviation. I'd like to get more involved someday.Do you belong to any aviation groups, like the NZ Warbirds, RNZAF Association, Royal Aeronautical Society or CAF, etc? Actually, no. I used to be in the Royal Aeronautical Society, the RNZRSA and a model club but have drifted out of all. I hope someday soon when I'm more financial to join Warbirds as an associate, maybe CAF too, the RAe Assoc and a few others. Also Friends of the RNZAF Museum. One day...Are you an aircraft modeller? (Scale or R/C) I used to actively do scale plastic kit modelling, mainly 1/48th. Lately I haven't done any but have a huge collection so still call myself a modeller! What are your favourite aviation books? Bryan Cox's three books on his RNZAF days Bryan Young's awesome book Beckoning Skies Battle of Britain by Leonard Mosely Errol Braithwaite's RNZAF books, excellent The History of NZ Aviation by Ross Macpherson and Ross Ewing The History of the RNZAF by Bentley and Conly Wings Over The Pacific by Alex Horn and so many moreWhat are your favourite aviation films or TV programmes? What's your name? Len Harvey Where are you from? Wickford, Essex, England. How old are you? 54 What is your main interest in aviation? Is it historic? Airlines? Military... Historic aviation, mainly preserved aircraft flying or static and mainly those that have appeared at Duxford at some point. Tell us about your background in aviation. Are you just an enthusiast or have you got more hands on experience? Are you a pilot? Do you have an Air Force Background? Or a civil aviation background? Just an enthusiast, total escape from work. Do you belong to any aviation groups, like the NZ Warbirds, RNZAF Association, Royal Aeronautical Society or CAF, etc? Friends of Duxford. Are you an aircraft modeller? (Scale or R/C) Many years ago, but have accumalalted quite a large collection to make when I finally retire or get enough spare time. What are your favourite aviation books? ‘Tumult In The Clouds’ , it would make quite a good film. There are quite a few other books that I have read that I felt were good but the list would be to long. What are your favourite aviation films or TV programmes? ‘Reach For The Sky’ probably the spark that got me interested in aviation. ‘The Battle of Britain’ ‘Tora, Tora, Tora’ ‘Angels One Five’ Do you frequent other aviation forums? I'll play.
What's your name? Sean
Where are you from? Christchurch
How old are you? 36, er... 37(just)
What is your main interest in aviation? Is it historic? Airlines? Military... Historic and military. Got a taste for it back in the days when as a kid got in to see the collection at Wigram before it was open to the public (Dad was a WO in the army and he knew the airfoce guys so...) Then it was reinforced by mad men I met in school like Corsair67. You would not believe how enthusiastic he was, but it rubbed off.
Tell us about your background in aviation. Are you just an enthusiast or have you got more hands on experience? Are you a pilot? Do you have an Air Force Background? Or a civil aviation background? Alas only in my dreams. Looked into joining the airforce once when about 17, but due to deafness in left ear couldn't be pilot. Still remember saying to the guy at Wigram when he offered other RNZAF positions that "If I can't drive the bus I'm not interested". Arrogance of youth I'm afraid.
Do you belong to any aviation groups, like the NZ Warbirds, RNZAF Association, Royal Aeronautical Society or CAF, etc? Alas no. Does having listened to the aviation ravings of Craig (Corsair67) over the last 23 years years count as some form of society?
Are you an aircraft modeller? (Scale or R/C) Why yes. Have a largeish stash of stuff in 1/48 and 1/32. Mainly Navel aircraft, anything NZ and whatever takes my fancy at the time. Was in IPMS years ago and am heading back that way. Getting back into R/c after many years away.
What are your favourite aviation books? Hmmmm.... have to have a think about this one.
What are your favourite aviation films or TV programmes? Battle of Britain (what else could it be?) Tora Tora Tora (I know, I'm a sick wee puppy)
Do you frequent other aviation forums? Dip in as guest in one or two when the mood is upon me.
Have you any comments or suggestions for this forum, to hopefully improve your own personal usage and enjoyment on the forum? Like it the way it is really, glad to have found it when I did. Hope over the summer to pop in more often with a far lighter work load.
Favourite aviation saying is:MARECHAL FERDINAND FOCH: "Aeroplanes are interesting toys but of no military value."
Cheers, Sean

Where are you from? Palmerston North. Currently living in London on my OE. Been in the UK for two and a half years. Home for Wanaka at Easter then returning home for good Oct next year.
How old are you? 28
What is your main interest in aviation? Is it historic? Airlines? Military... Historic aviation Agricultural aviation
Tell us about your background in aviation. Are you just an enthusiast or have you got more hands on experience? Are you a pilot? Do you have an Air Force Background? Or a civil aviation background? Gained my CPL (aeroplane) in 2003 but have not worked as a pilot as yet. After gaining my licence I headed to the UK but never with the intention of flying (only travelling). Worked as a topdressing loader/driver for five years and I will work in the industry on my return. Im very much looking forward to getting back into the left hand seat.
Do you belong to any aviation groups, like the NZ Warbirds, RNZAF Association, Royal Aeronautical Society or CAF, etc? No
Are you an aircraft modeller? (Scale or R/C) No
What are your favourite aviation books?

Do you frequent other aviation forums? Flypast Warbirds Resource Group
Have you any comments or suggestions for this forum, to hopefully improve your own personal usage and enjoyment on the forum? No youve got a great site here Dave. The Flypast site is very good with such an amazing depth of knowledge from a large number of contributors but in the last year or so it has lost some of its appeal as a number of troublemakers attempt to disrupt the site with very juvenile and aggresive posts. Its a shame because I learn a great deal from the many experts and members who post on these forums. Keep up the good work with the site.
Regards Chris

Nothing wrong with Top Gun mate (oh, except Tom Cruise I spose - but he wasn't so bad then). It was a hugerecruiting tool for the RNZAF when I joined up in 1989, recruited 1988. When I was on basic training the Cpl asked each of us why we joined up. Most of the 16 guys asked said they had seen Top Gun and wanted to fly like that. They'd gone for pilot selection and failed and were then talked into ground trades. I was one of only two or three who answered I loved the RNZAF and had always wanted to join. I never saw the film till during my basic training!!
Yes those BBC series Fighter Pilot and Test Pilot were brilliant. I remember in Test Pilot they flew all sorts of things at the ETPS, including an Andover. I'd love to see that series again. I once met Steve Moore when i was in, he came into the section for something or other while visiting the base. I recognised him instantly, he was something of a hero to me, even though this was years after his test pilot course and the series.
Behind Enemy Lines was very good right up till after the ejection scene. After that it turned to total pants. It was very popular though in the video shop i was then working at. Many people were under the impression it was true, thanks to some scandalous pre-publicity by the studio. I hate it when they do that. They said before Pearl Harbor they were recreating a true story too...

Yes, Hollywood certainly knows how to 'recreate' a true story, don't they. I loved the stupidity of Pearl Harbour when the P-40s are chasing the Japs down Battleship Row, but somehow don't get shot down themselves by every Tom, Hank or Chuck that are firing just about every calibre of weapon known to mankind at the same Japs. IFF must have been pretty bloody good back then....... I can imagine what some of the RNZAF personnel would have thought of the new recruits who said they wanted to fly like in Top Gun! I think you took a much more common sense and genuine option, Dave.

O.K, most of the other regulars have done thier intro bit, I better do mine, just so you know where this guy is coming from all you other 50 or so have to post your bit as well remember.... What's your name? Bruce Cooke Where are you from? Cambridge NZ (one of only a small handful - despite the forum title) How old are you? 33 when I last checked... What is your main interest in aviation? Is it historic? Airlines? Military... Yes O.K, all of the above, but particularly recreational flying, warbirds and civil classics - do love round engines.... Tell us about your background in aviation. Are you just an enthusiast or have you got more hands on experience? Are you a pilot? Do you have an Air Force Background? Or a civil aviation background? I have always been an aviation nut, since drawing aeroplanes in church as a little kid. I have worked in the aviation industry virtually since school, until relatively recently. I had a very brief airforce career of 2 1/2 weeks (the culture clashed with mine...) but then found work in civilian companies. I did my engineering training as a trainee tradesman and junior Bograt with Gulf Aeronautics at Ardmore, where I had the privilege to work on classics such as the sea fury, Harvards, Fokker Triplane, Tiger moths, Super cubs, Devons and a mix of Cessnas. Gulf didnt have the greatest strategic management and I got laid off, but then spent a couple of years with Engine Components NZ, overhauling aircraft engine cylinders. after that I worked with Aeromotive at Hamilton, doing a variety of tasks with aircraft documentation, some engineering and a bit of stores work. I got head hunted by Tranzglobal, before they became CityJet, where I was thier maintenance controller. Unfortunately there was a bundle of surprises hidden in thier documentation and CAA closed us down, followed by the receivers. After this fiasco, and a lot of bad will and politics throughout the industry, I started a new career as a technician at the university. With a reliable cashflow i joined SAA and started building an aircraft of my own design. I also hold a PPL, but havent flown for a while as funds keep disappearing in to the building project. Do you belong to any aviation groups, like the NZ Warbirds, RNZAF Association, Royal Aeronautical Society or CAF, etc? I am the chapter secretary for the Waikato Thames valley chapter, NZ Sport Aircraft Association. I am on the SportAvex 2006 Airshow Planning committee. Are you an aircraft modeller? (Scale or R/C) I build 1/72 scale models, I am collecting and building an example of every aircraft type operated by the RNZAF, and have secured all except for about 5 types. What are your favourite aviation books? Aircraft Spruce and Speciality Catalogue Sport Flying Magazine, Flypast and Aeroplane Monthly, anything by John King. What are your favourite aviation films or TV programmes? BoB Tora Tora Tora Deep Blue world the Dambusters Reach for the Sky Do you frequent other aviation forums? SAA Yahoo Aircraft design Forum Have you any comments or suggestions for this forum, to hopefully improve your own personal usage and enjoyment on the forum? More people need to start posting stuff!

What's your name? - Marcus Bridle......I use "hairy" as second nature, it is part of a nickname that was given to me years ago (the hairy dwarf) some people only know me by my nickname. Where are you from? - Originally, Aucklands North Shore, New Zealand. Currently, Remuera, New Zealand. ( at other times variously the UK, Oz, and the Manawatu) How old are you? -35 What is your main interest in aviation? Is it historic? Airlines? Military... - The aircraft, mainly say pre-1965. Tell us about your background in aviation. Are you just an enthusiast or have you got more hands on experience? Are you a pilot? Do you have an Air Force Background? Or a civil aviation background? - I started off a modeller, then discovered the real thing at 13 when the CAF at Dairy Flat took me under their wing (I was the Worlds youngest full Col. at 16 with special dispensation from CAF Headquarters), I then started flying whilst working my a-s-s off to cover the cost. Shortly after gaining my CPL (and getting my first job offer to fly commercially) I 'discovered' motorcycles.......DUH-OH!............end result a few missing organs and no medical. After a 10 year absence from aviation ( got side tracked by classic cars) my passion was rekindelled about two years ago. Now I am a dedicated penquin (or possibly read 'hangar rat') who has just found out that a PPL may not be out of the question med. wise. ;D Do you belong to any aviation groups, like the NZ Warbirds, RNZAF Association, Royal Aeronautical Society or CAF, etc? -Not currently (I hate the petty politics that seem to permeate most enthusists groups) Are you an aircraft modeller? (Scale or R/C) -WAS, mainly 1:72 scale, I had over 300 at one point, I sold most in the Trade and Exchange in the early '90s. What are your favourite aviation books? -Warplanes of the Third Reich by William Green. (oft maligned but fasinating none the less) -Warbirds of World War II by Jeffery L. Ethell (magnificent, all colour photos of WWII combat a/c) -Shot To Hell by Cory Graff (has to be seen to be believed some of the photos in this) -Gentlemen you have a race by John Teigler (signed) (the history of the Reno air races by an insider who was there from the beginning) What are your favourite aviation films or TV programmes? -Documentaries (I'll wimp out here as I cannot think of a particular favourite) Do you frequent other aviation forums? -mainly WIX and very occasionally the Flypast forum but I do look in on others from time to time.(thanks for the tip on the new one Dave) Have you any comments or suggestions for this forum, to hopefully improve your own personal usage and enjoyment on the forum? - I hate the Nanny protocols, when you type in "working my a-s-s off" without the hyphens it comes up "working I dissagree off" when you post.

Hi Marcus, I agree about some of the minor naughty words and how censoship is overkill as we're all adults and/or sensible here. I don't mind a little strong language when it's needed. Most of the censored words have remained as they came when I got the forum (as a default), but I have adapted some of the lesser offensive ones so they say what you want them to say. Ass had never occurred to me because I don't use Americanisms and I had allowed for members using the correct 'arse' if the need ever arose for that word. I have now made it so you can use ass too, in case the need arises where someone wants to talk about donkeys and mules... Some of the offensive words remain censored for good reason, but if things remain the way they are, I hope no-one will need to use them anyway. Well done on your CAF Colonel-ship at such a young age too mate!

It was sued to tow targets fromt eh RAN and RAAF and RAF. (the RAF just retired theirs IIRC). Anyway it took 221 people to fly it (I was a radar operator).
