Great to see more shots of my first airshow! I was all of 18mth, there's a photo of me in WAR's front cockpit! We lived on the field so I doubt we had to pay admission fees!
The first A-4 shot is excellent, what timing! Nice to see more of VNM1 also, and the Fieldair Fletcher and loader (likely to have been Owen Thompson or Steve Fuohy, I think?) alongside the WAW machines. I wonder which JetRanger that is?
I was lucky enough to borrow someone's home video of parts of the show, if only I'd had the technology to copy it to DVD! Something about the airshows of the 80s evokes real strong feelings of....longing, I don;t know why!

I never even noticed that all that flightline clutter was Fletchers. I was busy looking at the Harvards. I guess that would have been the display team Fletchers. They were a great act. It's amazing how small the crowd was, most airshows get more people on the practice day.

Nice pics Callum. That Sea Fury was the business, loved the Venom in 14 Sqn markings too. When I finish my last paper at Uni in the next three weeks I'll be going through my pics again for scanning and posting duty, hopefully before Xmas.

I wonder which JetRanger that is? If it is the same black machine with yellow and red trim that was operating around the Wellington area at the time I might have a pic of it somewhere. I was at that show too, I'll see if I have anything worth scanning NB, it was the same day as the United 747 mid-air blowout incident; we heard about on the news on the way home to Wellington.

Nice photos Zac that your Dad took there.
It is interesting to look back at airshows like this in the pre-Alpine Fighter Collection era (as such) and see how much has changed on the NZ scene.
The Dakota is still a faithful star of the show these days albeit in new uniform. The Mustang too is still with us and still a massive star. The Harvards are still the stalwarts of most airshows though in greater numbers now and a more wide variety of accurate colour schemes perhaps.
The Venom is dead, but we may see its replacement at airshows again very soon. The Sea Fury is no longer flying and no longer in NZ, a huge shame on both counts, but it must be a very big expense to keep one flying these days I guess, especially with the original engine like ZK-SFR.
The Devons still make a welcome appearance around the country, probably more on the scene now than in 1989 I guess. The Hercules is still another faithful and popular participant though in much less appearances these days it seems.
The Skyhawks were once the most popular appearance at any airshow, now completely silent and gone forever.
And what actually happened to the SE-5a replicas that used to be around. ZK-TOM and the one above? I haven't seen them for years. Are any still flying in NZ? Or have the 'real' replicas usurped them totally?

The SE-5A Replica 'G' above was the Stuart Tantrum one - ZK-SET, and is now on static display in the Rhodes museum at Wanaka. Tom Grant's ZK-TOM is still currently registered in his name, but I have not seen it out and about for many a year.

This looks like a good match. ZK-HCX doing joyrides from the Riverbank Carpark in Lower Hutt, around 1990 or so (ish, it has been a while).

After a bit of scanning, here are some pics from me and my father of this show. We both only had point and shoots, albeit mine a little less complicated than Dad's. It was my first proper camera, and this was the first airshow I ever took my own pictures at (age 12). I have discovered I have a copy of the souvenir programme, which I can scan if anyone is interested. Date was 25 February 1989. Sea Fury starting up Mustang starting up Pre-Kahu A-4G in the static with lots of things that go bang. Large Aero-models that caught my eye. Red Checkers parked up in the background. Herk display with Friendship on the crowdline Venom cartridge start Iroquois in the old brown camouflage My first attempt at a dramatic action shot...kinda works, and not bad given what I was taking it with This is coming up on 22 years ago now. Like Dave, Zac and others have suggested, there is more than a little nostalgia at going through these pictures again

.......and something I'm looking forward to when I meet ZK-VNM2 for the first time next year! It is amazing to see just how low some of the photos show the display aircraft, particularly Sam's last photo! If only I could remember the show......damn my 18mth old self! I have a couple of copies of the programme too

Sorry to disappoint you Zac, VNM2 wont be producing the Clouds of smoke cartridge starts. when we put it together inthe early 1990s we modified the starter breech to run off compressed air bottles as the cartridges were virtually unobtainable. It uses two dive bottles worth of air for every start, but these are substantially cheaper and more easily obtainable than custom made, limited life cartridges. It is a shame, but a practical concession to make it easier to operate. You still get the "batmobile" flame out the back on startup though!
