Sergeant George Hall was the engine NCO in 2 TAF in the mid-1950s until the Squadron operation ceased. As a brand new engine mechanic, George was my mentor, and played a large part in my life at the time as the regular staff attached to 2 TAF was a very small group. When all the Mustangs were grounded at an annual TAF camp, we were left with a hangar full of them, as well as several Harvards requiring a carb modification. We changed every Mustang radiator, some more than once, and ran every engine at regular intervals with a radiator sitting alongside He was incredibly knowledgeable and patient. Over the years we would occasionally meet and talk. Invariably 2 TAF was rated “the best of times.” George always had tabs on some 2 TAF personnel and always asked of others that I might know. I last saw him in the Swanson RSA a year or two ago and nothing had changed. George’s career saw him in in many roles after that and without doubt his Squadron Leader promotion was well earned.

Oh wow, so you will have worked on NZ2423 Don, that is now with Brendon Deere. I'd not realised your were on 2 TAF. I guess you also worked with Ron Hildreth on the squadron, who was a Territorial by then?

Yes, I worked on NZ2423 many times. She was the low hour aircraft and if memory serves me correctly was Mike Daniel's favourite for display work. I went from 2 TAF to 42 Sqdn. and worked on her there as well.Ron Hildreth's name rings a bell, but can't put a face to him. as regretfully memory not so good nowadays.

I have just seen the sad news on Facebook that former RNZAF pilot and instructor Pete Cochran passed away today after a battle with cancer. He was the most prolific member of the Red Checkers ever, flying wit the team in over 20 seasons I believe, in his 40-odd year RNZAF career.

I am not certain but I imagine he probably trained more RNZAF pilots than any other instructor in RNZAF history.

The following message was received from the RNZAF.
It is with regret I advise that SQNLDR (Rtd) Peter Cochran M82512 passed away at his home in Feilding this afternoon, 3rd Sep following a long illness. A funeral service for SQNLDR Cochran is expected to be held at the Ohakea multi-function centre during the week 7-11 Sep (potentially the afternoon of Wed 9th). Due to the limit of 100 pers at gatherings, family and invited guests will be given priority in the multi-function centre. A secondary venue, nominally the Ohakea W/Os and SNCOs Mess, will be used for overflow guests, with the service live-streamed. Details of the funeral service will be promulgated in due course.
Messages of condolence for Isabel and the family can be sent to jill.hardy@nzdf.mil.nz.
Peter served from 11 January 1966 to 31 January 1982 and 29 August 1990 to 22 October 2012 and he served as a Pilot.
