A note to say I have now established this thread as the new place to post death notices and obituaries of people involved in New Zealand Aviation and the Armed Forces that would be of interest to readers of the forum. Feel free to copy or write detah notices, funeral details and obituaries in this thread. Cheers, Dave Homewood

I think it might be worthwhile we make a sticky thread in the General section for all NZ aviation related deaths perhaps, and then if someone dies who was aircrew, groundcrew, civil pilot, etc, they can be added to the list, all in the one spot.
If it is someone who then is worthy of a fuller obituary and discussion (as as Jim Sheddan's thread started today) a seperate thread for them can also be started by whoever wants to post it.
How would this sound everyone? A good idea?

OK, as my note above says, this is now the place for death notices, funeral details and smaller obituaries. It is a sticky thread in the General Board. However, if there is someone really well known or important to you, and you want to also start a new thread devoted just to them, please feel free to in the apporiate Board. For example a wartime fighter pilot in the Wartime RNZAF board, someone involved in an aviation musem in the preservation Board, etc, as has always been done.

Thanks for the thread Dave.
It is with Sadness I have to take first opportunity to use it for one of my SAA Chapter people. Some of you in the Homebuilt Fraternity may know Graeme Browning of Matamata, an active and enthusiastic member of the SAA Waikato Thames Valley chapter. Graeme passed away on Friday after battling illness for the last couple of years. He did hold on long enough to see his long term project, Vans RV6A ZK-RVA completed and flown earlier this year. Funeral will be held at the Matamata Bible church on Tuesday 14th December at 11am. Case Groot, one of Graemes good mates and fellow RV6 builder, is organising a fly - past of RV aircraft over the cemetery, Led by ZK-RVA.

Another sad passing of a significant NZ aviation personality: (advised by Mike Feeney This Morning)
Kenneth Ewen Stanley Fenwick; MBE. Squadron Leader, Royal New Zealand Air Force. Service Number: 421036. Born: Martinborough on 6th of May, 1917. Died: Hamilton on Sunday morning, 5th of December, 2010. This advisory and invitation notice is on behalf of Ken's sons, Ewen and Lindsay Fenwick. Please Forward on to any person whom you feel would like to be advised of the Memorial Service and Celebration of Ken's long life and substantial contribution to the standard of flight training in New Zealand. With the approval and assistance of Lindsay and Ewen, I shall be writing a Tribute to KEF which will be published and will then be archived into the annals of our Nation's aviation history. The Memorial Service will be held at the Newstead Cemetery, near Hamilton, New Zealand, at 1.30 pm on Saturday, January 15th, 2011. It is easy to locate, being just a few kilometres east of Hamilton on the main road to Morrinsville. Following will be a reception function starting from 3.30 pm at the Waikato Aero Club which is located on the western side of the airport beside the control tower; on the Hamilton-TeAwamutu main highway. The venue is most fitting as Ken and Wilma spent so much of their life there. Food and beverages will be provided. This will also make it convenient for those flying to the Celebration of Ken's long flying career. Should you have any messages for Ewen and Lindsay, please use the following Email addresses: LindsayFenwick@cs.com EwenandJoanFenwick@xtra.co.nz Because it is difficult to estimate, for catering purposes, the number of people attending, it would be useful if you could Email or telephone me. My contact details are below. With respect to the Tribute that I shall be working on during the period up to January 20th, 2011, please feel free to Email me any memories you may have of Ken and Wilma and indicate whether you would be happy for me to perhaps include excerpts in the article. An Email version will be available shortly after publication in "NZ Aviation News". I am at: Email: mikefeeney@actrix.co.nz Home phone: 07-8464210 Cell: 027-2293132 Postal address: 26A Holmes Street, Nawton, Hamilton. 3200 Thank you all. Lindsay, Ewen and family members look forward to meeting with you and, of course, the function will provide the opportunity for old friends and past members of the Waikato, and other aero clubs, to catch-up with each other.

Sad to report that today's Dominon Post carries the death notice of Derek Erskine.
I'll collect more info to post but recall that Derek was a Canadian -trained WW2 pilot who later became an early topdressing pioneer and flew for many years until he lost his medical.
His name will be well known to many, especially KiwiBeaver who has some great old shots of Derek's.
Funeral tomorrow 1000hrs, Upper Hutt Baptist Church.

Indeed Tom, a wonderful fellow who has struggled lately with his health. Lovely 93 year old wife Ellen rang me the night before he passed saying he didn't have long to go. I sent him a pile of photos from the Lawson Field Reunion which he got a couple of weeks ago which brought a big smile so I'm told. Both his children were present during the last hours. I have been communicating with them for 4 years now and met them when I was over for the Masterton Ag Reunion in May 2009. Neville Worsley and I drove down to Upper Hutt and spent a couple of hours with them. I have quite a bit of literature here that Derek gave to me which I put in an editorial for Rob Neil at Pacific Wings. He published a 2 part special on Derek in the February and March editions earlier this year (2010). R.I.P. old mate.

Some of you may have known this chap: www.harnesslink.com/www/Article.cgi?ID=86172Gentleman Bob Peat passes away aged 83 Harnesslink News Room 01:30 PM 22-Dec-2010 NZTCOMMENTS(0)TRACKBACKS(0) - One of harness racing's finest gentlemen - Robert (Bob) John Peat (RNZAF 1946-1952) passed away peacefully at Matariki Hospital in Te Awamutu on Monday (August 20) with his wife of 58 years Ruth by his side. He was 83. Bob was not only loved by his family but the entire harness racing industry in New Zealand, especially in the North Island. World-wide horse trader John Curtin of JC International described the long-time horseman as the consummate gentleman. "Bob was an absolute gentleman - one of the nicest guys I've ever had anything to do with in harness racing and I'm 59 now and been involved in the sport since I was 18. "The industry has lost a great man. I remember him racing at Claudelands all those years ago. Truly - one of harness racing's most genuine horsemen. His passing is very sad news," Curtin said. Top New Zealand reinsman Peter Ferguson, who drove for Bob, endorsed Curtin's comments. "Bob was a genuine man who never had a bad word to say about anyone. He lived for his horses. He was a really great guy and I will be telling everyone just how great he was when I speak at his funeral tomorrow (Thursday). I really enjoyed driving for him and I haven't got a bad word to say about him. He will be missed," Ferguson said. Bob trained for most of his life but Harness Racing New Zealand records only start from 1985-86. During that time he trained 24 winners, 45 place-getters and won $137,000 in stake money. Due to ill health Bob last trained in the 2008-2009 season and his last winner came the season prior. More recently his best horse was the now deceased Evander's Gold trotter Bunnys Gold who won eight races and placed three times for $56,780 in stakes. Bob was a loved father and father-in-law of John and Viv, David and Lesley, Lynn and Neil, Bill and Vicki and loved grandfather of Veronica, Claire, Robert and Bridget, Stephen, Patrick, Josephine, Jessica, and Logan. He was also a much loved great grandfather to Eva and Oscar. A service for Bob will be held at St Stephens Church, Mahoe Street, Hamilton, on Thursday, 23 December 2010 at 10:30am followed by private cremation. All communications to the Peat family - PO Box 5523 Frankton, Hamilton, 3242. Rest In Peace. Duane RANGER (editor)

Well known war veteran dies Published: 8:31PM Monday January 03, 2011 Source: ONE News
A high profile New Zealand war veteran has died.
Eric Brady, 87, was thrust into the media spotlight when he was viciously attacked outside his RSA club in Papatoetoe in 2009.
The Auckland man flew Lancaster planes during World War II.
The father of two died yesterday at Middlemore Hospital.
Maurangi Pere, who was 19 at the time, was sentenced to nearly nine years in prison over the attack on Brady that broke his jaw in two places.
Judge Charles Blackie said he would serve a minimum of four years for the cowardly attack against Brady who had risked his own life to protect him and the rest of the country in World War II.

One of my childhood friends' Dad died at Hastings couple of months ago — his name was John Young.
I did briefly see a copy of his funeral Order of Service (that my mother had) at Xmas and it mentioned him flying Lancasters during WWII, something I had never known about before.

I never realised that Eric Brady had flown Lancasters. I'm sure I read when he hit the headlines a few years back that he'd been in the Army in Italy so someone had some duff gen it seems. If he was 87 now he must have been in Lancs at the tail end of the war and pretty young too. About 16 when he joined the RNZAF??
