I'm so sorry to hear that, I grew up reading about her exploits and felt very fortunate to have a chat with her at a Classic Fighters post-show dinner one year. Such a lovely lady.

SQN LDR (RTD) Llanwyn Andrew Smith J91134 ENGR RNZAF 8 Jan 1984 to 24 Aug 2003 Passed away 14 September 2020 in Palmerston North Hospital after a battle with cancer. Further details to be advised. I’m very saddened to read of the passing of an old schoolmate & friend. Smithy & I first met in 1979 at Hastings Boys High School when we were placed in the same 3rd form class. He was a bright guy and excelled at school (unlike myself!) & we both joined the local ATC at a similar time, him leaving to join the RNZAF as a ‘clockie’ and me staying in the Corps for 35 years, regularly catching up at Ohakea at the Airman's club, Corporals Club, WO’s & SNCO’s and later the Officers mess as he progressed through the ranks! He received the MNZM in the 2004 New Years Honours list, by then out of the RNZAF and into his civvie career & staying close to his roots with aviation and defence. He was front & centre with Project Kahu and he was a talented engineer. I last met him by chance getting into a lift in a hotel in Melbourne 6 or 7 years ago & we caught up for dinner and a long chat over an ale or two. He was working for BECA then, in a senior role and doing well. I see he was given another accolade a year or two back, article below. Just a top bloke, a loyal & loving family man with a wonderful sense of humour. Blue skies Smithy, until our next beer…

W/O (RTD) Roger Wilfred Louis BEM F78343 MTFIT 12 Apr 1956 to 1 Sep 1993 when he was an ATC Adviser. On 17 Sep 2020. Further details TBA From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999 : LOUIS, Flight Sergeant Roger Wilfred, BEM. F78343; Born Motueka, 1 Sep 1938; RNZAF 12 Apr 1956 to 1 Sep 1993; MT Fitter, then Air Training Corps Instructor. Citation British Empire Medal (QB1980): Flight Sergeant Louis joined the RNZAF in 1956 in the Mechanical Transport trade and has served at five RNZAF Bases, including Lauthala Bay in Fiji. He is currently NCO-in-Charge of the Mechanical Transport repair Flight in Wigram. F/S Louis is regarded by both his superiors and subordinates as a most highly knowledgeable and diligent SNCO. At a time when there was no civil recognition of Service standards he successfully undertook civil automotive examinations at his own volition and since utilised this knowledge to the benefit of the Service. With enthusiasm and drive he successfully supervised the layout and establishment of motor vehicle servicing in new quarters during 1979. Through his example and leadership he was successful in maintaining high morale in a flight whose personnel were working in sub-standard conditions. He is notable for the standards he demands of himself, and for the advice and assistance he provides to others in his own time. During his service he has been very active in Base activities, representing the NZ Services in athletics from 1956 to 1967, and in later years he has been an enthusiastic supporter of RNZAF brass band activities. In his conscientious and dedicated approach, F/S Louis has demonstrated professionalism and loyalty which has directly contributed to the efficiency of his unit. Errol
