Don Judd, who died yesterday, started topdressing in October 1967. For the vast majority of his working life starting from 1977 he was with Wanganui Aero Work - including occasional babysitting of young Zac, then tolerating slightly older Zac's mild hero-worship, and then twentysomething Zac's interminable questions about the old days. Dad shared a few stories with me last night. Recently I've made friends with his grandson Cameron who is an enthusiastic aspiring pilot (groundcrew for John Luff's DH Venom) and a fine young man, no doubt with many great memories of the local legend that was his Grandad. This photo was one of several old pilot photos that hung in the Wanganui Aero Work tearoom during my uncompleted apprenticeship of 2008-10, and I took them all home to scan and save for prosperity before discreetly putting them back up. Don Judd by Zac Yates, on Flickr Only recently I was planning to visit him for a long-overdue catchup about his life and career. Lesley, Cameron and the whole family are in my thoughts tonight. Don, you will be deeply missed by a great many people. Rest in peace, blue skies and tailwinds. delticman and I were trading text messages and emails about Don last night; hopefully he can chime in with some memories. I'll share an obituary once I find one.
