Sheer coincidence that this morning I was reading an NZ Wings magazine dated December 1997/January 1998, which featured an article on an A340 run to Kai Tak, while with Cathay Pacific, that featured "Toots", and included a photo of him, along with a brief summary of his career. He also appeared in the June 1997 edition as part of the crew the flew the first scheduled A340 service from Hong Kong to Auckland. I remember Peter (Toots) as a copilot, then a captain on the Friendships at NATTS, while I was NCO i/c Maintenance. Cheerful and fun to have around. Taken far too early. RIP.

Wow, 105 is a great innings. I wonder what he had worked on in WWII. I wish I'd known about him when he was still with us.

No G W Brown is included in RNZAF personnel departing for overseas in WW2, using Errol M's "For Your Tomorrow, Vol 3", though could have served in South Pacific of course, as the FYT series does not include travel to this theatre because of poor state of records.

American Bill Charney nick named "Windsock" recently passed away after a short illness. He had his beautiful Staggerwing restored down at Manderville in 2008 then flew her across the ditch and on to his home in the States. It seems a few people may have met him during his time in New Zealand, he was a nice fella very enthusiastic and giving of his time, always remember he allowed the local kids to have a good look over his machine while he was on the island. Thoughts with his family and friends.

A sad one. This has been announced on the RNZAF;s Facebook page. Former Chief of Defence Staff (now Chief of Defence Force) Air Marshal (Retired) David Crooks CB OBE passed away in Wellington on Wednesday, aged 90. Air Marshal Crooks joined our Air Force in 1951 and, after qualifying as a pilot, held a variety of operational and training postings and senior roles in the Air Force and the broader Defence Force until his appointment as Deputy Chief of Air Staff in 1980. He went on to become Chief of Air Staff in 1983, and became Chief of Defence Staff in 1986, before retiring in late 1987. AM Crooks was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 1985 for distinguished services to the RNZAF. In retirement Air Marshal Crooks was active in many voluntary organisations, including serving on the board of the Air Force Museum Trust. A message from Chief of Air Force Air Vice-Marshal Andrew Clark "During Air Marshal Crooks’ long service he had played an important part in the Air Force’s history. This year the Air Force celebrates its 85th anniversary. When Air Marshal Crooks joined the organisation was still young, and over the next 37 years he made a significant contribution to its evolution and development, through times of both conflict and peace. He was one of those who led the way and set an example to all, as a wise and highly-respected airman and leader. On behalf of everyone in the Air Force, I extend my deepest sympathies to Air Marshal Crooks’ family.” The military funeral for Air Marshal Crooks on Wednesday 16 March at 11am will be live-streamed by Harbour City Funerals. The link will be through their website www.tributes.co.nz. An online Condolence Book will also be available. MORE ➡️ nzdf.mil.nz/air-marshal-crooks

David Crooks was an excellent CAS, and a great supporter of getting the air force museum to its completion date, following on from the good work by previous CAS Pat Neville. In his early career he was the adjutant at 4TAF Sqn Taieri and often flew their Mustangs. An experienced Canberra pilot who was well known for flying a Canberra B12 from Ohakea to Woodbourne sans canopy the day after he had jettionsed it during an emergency landing. When Cliff Jenks and myself retired from the RNZAF in 1984, and because of our combined knowledge of air force history He appointed us Historial Research Officers so that we could continue to have access to official records for ongoing research. David was also a member of the NZ Antarctic Association. RIP old friend
