McDONALD, Capt. David M: Air NZ (Rtd) F/O NZRAF 5 Squadron (1958-64). Beloved husband of Aileen, and much loved cousin, uncle, friend, and neighbour. David passed away peacefully at Anthony Wilding Rest Home Hospital in Halswell on July 20, 2022, after a long battle with cancer, aged 82. It was his wish that his body be donated to the Anatomy Department of the University of Otago Medical School to aid cancer research, so there will be no formal funeral. When it is safe to do so, post Covid, hopefully in the Spring, we will have a gathering for all family, friends, and neighbours here at our home to celebrate his long and adventurous life. Very special thanks to all the staff at Anthony Wilding Rest Home for their kind and loving care. Jules Tapper posted this to his Facebook page today:
Many people will be saddened to hear of the passing of Don Spary in Queenstown this week. He was aged 90. A private family funeral is to be held and a celebration of his life to be advised later. Don was a very experienced and brave pilot & administrator. Few would know that he had been awarded a George Medal - which is a very high honour - for gallantry and he was also conferred an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit for his services to aviation and business. He was for many years a conspicuous person in aviation. RIP Don. Condolences to Jan and all the family.
I then found this death notice:
SPARY, Major Robert Donald (Don): R.E., GM, ONZM On July 27, 2022, aged 90, peacefully at Lakes District Hospital, Queenstown. Dearly loved and loving husband and best friend of Jan for 64 years, and best father and father-in-law of Miranda and John, Lisa and Mathew, Bridget and Murray, Fergus and Sarah, Alastair and Charlotte. Very much loved Grumper of Fred and Bella, George, Henry, Sophie and Georgia, Oscar and Felix, and Edie (Shay). Don will be privately farewelled by family and a celebration of his life will soon follow. (To be advised). The Spary family are so grateful for all the wonderful support received from too many to name personally but include his doctor Fiona Rorrison, Sheena Lees, The Arrowtown Fire Brigade, St John Ambulance, and the staff at Lakes District Hospital who gave him such gentle care and were so patient and kind with us, and a special mention must go to Letty, Don's devoted friend and carer. In lieu of flowers, a donation to either the Arrowtown Fire Brigade or St John Ambulance would be much appreciated. Messages to ferg@qmg.co.nz or PO Box 9, Arrowtown 9302.

I interviewed him about his Air Force days, as an engine fitter in NZ, Cyprus and Singapore, and then as a Flight Engineer. A top bloke with some great stories. RIP.
