It's with sadness we inform our membership of the passing of Paul Drake. Paul passed peacefully in the early hours of Friday 8th. Paul learnt to fly with South Canterbury Aero Club whilst still in high school and was a member of the Timaru boys High Aero Club. Paul's father Doug was also a huge part of our aero club's history culminating in him being our patron for years and obviously passed that passion onto Paul. Paul served the Aero Club and General Aviation community for many years in many roles, as an Air traffic controller, Chairman of ACAG, as a committee member, a Flying New Zealand (Royal New Zealand Aero Club) Executive member and area representative, and Chief Ground Judge at many many many regional and national events. Our thoughts are with his Mum Mavis and his family. Paul will be remembered for his energy, quirky humor and happy aviation smile. Fly High Paul.

Intrigued by 'Touhy's Tigers' of the "RNZAF Canadian Training Squadron of 1942", an organization I am not familiar with. Anybody else care to comment on this? This man's service number was NZ4212796, embarked for San Francisco and Canada ex Wellington 4th October 1943 aboard Nieuw Amsterdam, arrived San Francisco 16th October, trained with 13 SFTS, 9 SFTS, graduated as Sgt Pilot 21st April 1944 (promoted to F/Sgt w.e.f. 21/10/44), shipped to UK, disemb approx Oct 44, with 12 PRC, 5(P)AFU, 11(P)AFU, 56 OTU 24/4/45, disemb NZ (Wellington) 23/10/45, tfd Reserve C 20/12/45. Seems he was not in Canada during 1942 after all. Also would appear he failed to get on operations due to the short amount of time remaining till VE-Day, not his fault!

David, "Touhys Tigers of the RNZAF Canadian Training Squadron" sounds to me like an unofficial title that a group of RNZAF trainee airmen gave themselves when undertaking initial training in NZ knowing that they were headed to Canada for their advanced training. Not unknown in RNZAF history for groups of airmen to give themselves fancy names. When at Boy Entrant School (BES) in 1964 we thought we could con the locals into believing that we were members of the "Bomber Escort Squadron!! So much for the imaginations of a bunch of 16 year olds

Paul, I think you might well be on the right track with that suggestion. I also have occasionally seen "Joke" units or formations dreamed up by trainees, in peacetime and war. Are you aware of the "Grey Wolves" of the WW2 era (aircrew trainees who "didn't make the grade", and were returned to NZ)? These fellows even put out some of those triangular felt pennants of this supposed unit; the Museum collection has a few examples of these, perhaps you have seen these on your visits to Wigram?
I am also a bit suspicious of that "Canadian Training Squadron" too, as there was a unit with same initials at Trenton in Canada where reject aircrew were sent and tested to see if they were suitable for training in another aircrew trade, or were sent back to NZ by first available ship. Not every aircrew trainee achieved his dream.

I was very sad to read just now that Paul Drake had passed away. In my capacity as CFI of the South Canterbury Aero Club from 1973 to 1982, I had the pleasure of teaching Paul to fly and can clearly remember both he and his friend Ken Troon coming to the Aero Club in their school uniforms to start their ventures into aviation. I also had a lot of contact with Paul's father Doug during that period and looking back, feel privileged to have been a part of their respective lives. Michael Tucker Paraparaumu Beach
