Alby Williams was an engine fitter in the RNZAF. We were posted to 41 Sqdn 61-62. He and I returned to NZ together at the end of 62. I lost track of him, but I believe he went to the UK and became a flight engineer there. He was a engineer on all of ANZ heavy jets.

CAF MESSAGE: It is with great sadness that I must inform you of the passing of one of our RNZAF family. Squadron Leader Clive ‘Cliff’ Carter passed away unexpectedly at home during the weekend. After serving with the RAF, including a tour during the Falklands War aboard Victor aircraft, Cliff joined the RNZAF in 1987 as an Air Electronics Officer. He then served on 5 Squadron, achieving the position of Operations Flight Commander. Cliff was appointed Commandant of the Command and Staff College in 1998. After a brief period outside of the RNZAF, he re-enlisted in 2006 and served at No 485 Wing and DEA (O), where he undertook numerous standards, publication and staff officer roles. The RNZAF is supporting Cliff’s family at this difficult time. Details of Cliff’s funeral are being finalised and will be advised shortly. If you would like to send notes of condolence to the family, these can be emailed to WGCDR Mark Chadwick at mark.chadwick3@nzdf.mil.nz Our thoughts are with Heather, Cliff’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. Gutted to hear the sad news about Cliff Carter. We had discussed doing an interview about his RAF and RNZAF careers and his time in the Falklands War. He was keen but asked that we waited till he retired, which was coming up soon.

Errol, that entry for the CAS commendation should read Air Electronics Officer (not Operator) as he was a commissioned officer.

Errol, that entry for the CAS commendation should read Air Electronics Officer (not Operator) as he was a commissioned officer. Thanks Paul, It's either a mistake by Colin when compiling his By such Deeds or an error in the original document (which I don't have a copy of). Have amended my master copy of the book meanwhile. Cheers, Errol

A quick check of my Catalina aircrew file indicates that the above individual (Griffith Royden Harvey, NZ4213434) almost certainly served with 6 Squadron as groundcrew. However slightly possible he served as aircrew very late in war.

From Colin Hanson’s B y Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999 : PARSONSON, Leading Aircraftman Gordon Stewart, BEM. NZ43929; Born Masterton, 21 Nov 1919; NZ Army (3 Fd Amb) Mar 1942; RNZAF 22 Jan 1943 to 7 Dec 1945; Medical Orderly. Citation British Empire Medal (NY1945): A ircraftman Parsonson, the only medical orderly attached to a remotely-situated unit of the RNZAF in the Solomons over a period of three months displayed superior initiative, exceptional skill and untiring devotion to duty, and contributed directly toward maintaining morale. Many cases of malaria and jaundice occurred, and as the nearest doctor was some eighty miles away, the responsibility of treating and caring for the patients fell upon Aircraftman Parsonson, who nursed them with the utmost care and sympathy. By his extreme devotion to duty he undoubtedly played a large part in saving the life of one airman who was critically ill after being bitten by a poisonous centipede, and throughout he displayed a degree of clinical skill superior to that expected of a medical orderly, and considerably beyond that required in the performance of his normal duty. AC1 Parsonson went overseas with 14 Sqn RNZAF and on arriving at Guadalcanal was transferred to 3 Sqn. After a short period he was again transferred, to 53 Radar Unit at Tolobaita, North Malaita in the Solomons where, in addition to caring for the RNZAF personnel of that unit, he extended his care to the local Melanesian people. Not sure quiet where to post this, so starting here.
Sadly I have heard this weekend about the sudden passing of Bill (Kevin) Billings. After many hours on and around aircraft through his time in the RNZAF, Motat Volunteer (around 30 years ago) and long time supporter of the Subritzky Collection at Dairy Flat, Bill passed away very unexpectedly last week.
Rest in peace Bill.

Damned sad news. Bill was a top bloke, a good boss when he was a Sergeant in the Safety And Surface trade, and a very devoted warbird fan. As well as his work with the Subritzky collection, MOTAT and other places, he was also a long time Confederate Air Force Colonel. He will be very much missed.
