I have read on a Facebook group that my old General Service Training School GSI Corporal, and later RNZAF PRO Squadron Leader Kavae Tamariki has passed away. Such a loss, he was an awesome man. I am sure many RNZAF recruits who went through GSTS in the 1980s and 1990s will remember him fondly, despite his role as a GSI.

I am sure many RNZAF recruits who went through GSTS in the 1980s and 1990s will remember him fondly, despite his role as a GSI. From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999 : TAMARIKI, Flight Lieutenant Kavae Exham, MNZM. J92376; Born Tokoroa, 27 May 1965; RNZAF 4 Jun 1987 to ~; Assistant Security Officer. Citation Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (NY2000): Flight Lieutenant Tamariki joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1987 and in June 1998 was posted to Angola as a United Nations Military Observer. Because of the deteriorating military situation, the decision was taken on 11 December to evacuate United Nations personnel from Kuito. His role was to control this evacuation in the face of thousands of local people who had converged on the airport panicking in their attempt to flee. Over a period of 30 minutes, Flight Lieutenant Tamariki’s personal safety was at risk as he physically stopped people climbing on the aircraft being used for the evacuation. Once the ramp was raised, it was found that five people were still on the ground. Flight Lieutenant Tamariki managed to get them on board through the side door. However the crowd stopped this door being shut and he spent a further half hour removing people who had forced their way on board before the aircraft was able to depart. His efforts to ensure a safe and successful evacuation demonstrated devotion to duty and initiative of a very high level.Errol

Looks as though last sentence (?, or more?) have been accidentally nipped off this citation! To save Errol the trouble I will provide the missing words (below) from my copy!

Ken lived here in Cambridge, at Resthaven retirement village. I interviewed him a few years back but he asked me to not release the interview till after he passed away. I can do that now, someday. He bitterly regretted that by the time he got onto an operational Lancaster squadron, the war had ended.
