Hmm, I cannot help but wonder if that photo, which I scanned from John's personal collection, was lifted straight from my post about him by the Independent journalist.
I'm not convinced that John trained the USMC pilots in Meteors. He'd trained himself in Meteors in Britain and had jet experience so was made training officer when the squadron converted to jets, but I don't think that the USMC had Meteors, did they?

It is possible he got it from an RAF archive or maybe from John himself at some stage but it seems rather a co-incidence. I have submitted an obituary myself to NZ Aviation News and used the same photo along with another.

www.hawkesbaytoday.co.nz/local/news/fly-past-honours-hawkes-bay-aviation-stalwart/3953076/Fly past honours Hawke's Bay aviation stalwart ROGER MORONEY | 24th May 2011 Share At least a dozen aircraft were set to pay aerial tribute today to one of the region's aviation stalwarts, Cyril Whitaker, who died last Friday. Mr Whitaker was a life member of the Hawke's Bay and East Coast Aero Club, and had been patron for the past 14 years - only recently being unanimously voted into that role for another year. Many of the the club's pilots were to don flying gear today to join in a nine-aircraft formation to pay tribute to their friend. Club president Bruce Govenlock said the fly-past, set to take place about 2.45pm after the funeral service in Havelock North, would be led by aircraft from New Zealand Aerial Mapping - the aviation company Mr Whitaker was with for 38 years. The club's formation would follow, then individual aircraft. "We're not sure how many will go up as many of the club pilots want to attend the service," Mr Govenlock said. "We have left it up to them." Mr Whitaker's love of aviation was sparked when he was just 4 and seated on the lap of his father, who took him for a flight. That was in 1929, and in 1938, after his family moved from the South Island to live in Hastings, he would often cycle out to the Bridge Pa Aerodrome to watch the aircraft. He joined the local Air Training Corps during the war years and met Piet Van Asch, who was his adjutant. It would become a long association - with Mr Van Asch developing New Zealand Aerial Mapping, which Mr Whitaker would later join. The pair also enjoyed the camaraderie of the growing aero club through the years, with Mr Whitaker driving many of the projects that had expanded the club. He also possessed a remarkable library of photographs which he passed on to the Hawke's Bay Aviation Heritage group. On Sunday evening the aero club put on a special occasion for Mr Whitaker's family. Because of an association he had with the RNZAF, the club put on a traditional "aircraft toast" for Mr Whitaker. "There were a few toasts of port - it was a wonderful evening," Mr Govenlock said.

An article from 2009 about the late Bill Barnett. RIP. www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/local-news/east-bays-courier/2921348/WW-Two-veteran-proves-them-dead-wrongDespite being posted dead in 1945 Bill Barnett has recently marked two milestones. Mr Barnett was shot down over the North Sea while flying a Mosquito plane in World War Two. His wife of just five months, Dilys, even received a widow’s pension. But Mr Barnett is very much alive. “They paid her a widow’s pension and I had to pay it all back,” he says. The war veteran celebrated his 90th birthday in August, and marked the anniversary of the start of World War Two on September 1. He has been living at St Andrew’s Village in Glendowie for the past five years. His walls are adorned with black and white photographs and he keeps a tin box full of old letters as reminders of his tale of survival. Mr Barnett had a passion for flying and was assigned to the 627 Squadron, spending most of the early part of the war as a flying instructor. He was planting mines to try to block Hamburg port when his plane was shot down. Landing in the inhospitable North Sea, he spent four days adrift in a one-man dinghy before finally reaching Hooge, a tiny island off the coast of Germany. He scrambled ashore and banged on the door of the nearest house. “The woman came down, took one look at me and screamed.” Blood covered his forehead, he had head wounds and the lifejacket had dyed his skin a mysterious shade of green. He was taken in for the night, cleaned up and then taken to a prisoner of war camp the next day, where he remained for a few months. As the war ended, the Germans fled. He took command of the camp and was left to find food for the interns. To get home, Mr Barnett had to drive across Germany. “I’m always amazed I was able to drive from Schleswig all the way down to Hamburg.” After an emotional reunion with Dilys in England the couple came to New Zealand. Together they had three children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr Barnett continued to work for the air force and rose to the rank of Squadron Leader. His job took him to 32 countries, but he says New Zealand is his favourite. A signed photograph from Queen Elizabeth II hangs on his wall. It is from when he captained the first Royal New Zealand Air Force aircraft to take part in a royal visit. When asked what he thought of the Queen, he replied: “All right.” As well as a 20-year career in the air force, Mr Barnett has worked in a bike shop and done “all sorts of jobs to fill in the time”. His wife died in 2004. These days Mr Barnett has an active social life at St Andrew’s. He plays bingo every Friday afternoon, and has frequent visits from family. He takes two walks a day and uses his exercise bike daily. Retirement can’t slow this war veteran down.

SQN LDR (RTD) Neville John Milne C78317 Engineer RNZAF 19 Jan 1956 to 1 December 1977. Regret to advise that John Milne passed away on Tuesday 14th June. Funeral is to be held at Puhinui Gardens Cemetery at 1100hrs on Monday 20th June followed by refreshments at the East Tamaki Bowling Club on Tamaki Rd. John's address is 10 Stonex Rd Papatoetoe, email john.lae@ihug.co.nz Joined RNZAF in 1956 as a Boy Entrant
Please see Ray Browns' comments below. On behalf of Ray I humbly apologise for getting the wrong persons details and hope any family members are not offended. As can be seen from Rays' email, there were two "John Milnes" on the same Boy Entrant Course ! The funeral for the correct John Milne was held yesterday.
This has been an example of mistaken identities and I contributed to the error. John Milne’s service number, I have just confirmed, was 78181. I don’t know that he was ever commissioned and I think he left the service after 8 years but I don’t have confirmation of that. John qualified as a pilot retiring from AirNZ as a 747 Captain. Neville John Milne 78317 also joined the RNZAF in our BES draught but is still alive as far as we know. I hope that clears the matter up and I do apologize for any embarrassment that I have caused.
Regards,
Ray Brown
