CARRUTHERS, Walter George (Jock) Wing Commander RNZAF (RTD) P73245 Mary Potter Hospice Wellington 2 May 2018. (Death notice Dominion Post 9 May 2018. Jock j7 joined the RNZAF 7 December 1950 retired briefly in 1980 and served again 1981 - 29 September 1992 in the Secretarial Branch. He was awarded the MBE in the New Years honours list 1971 From Colin Hanson’s By Such Deeds – Honours and awards in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 1923 – 1999 : CARRUTHERS, Wing Commander Walter George, MBE. P73245; Born Glasgow, Scotland, 28 Sep 1930; RAF 25 Jan 1949 to 24 Jul 1950; RNZAF 7 Dec 1950 to 25 Jul 1980 & 7 Sep 1981 to 29 Sep 1992; Secretarial. Citation Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (NY1971): Flight Lieutenant Carruthers joined the RNZAF in December 1950 having previously served eighteen months with the Royal Air Force. He has held a variety of administrative posts in New Zealand and has served overseas as Adjutant/Accountant Officer with No 41 Squadron since August 1968. Flt Lt Carruthers’ whole service has been characterised by loyalty and dedication of a very high order. He has consistently applied himself to his tasks with resolution and with disregard for personal interests and has as a result built up an enviable record in his Branch. Nowhere have Flt Lt Carruthers’ outstanding qualities been more evident than during his service in the Far East with No 41 Squadron. Over this period his wife has suffered a long and very serious illness resulting in major surgery. Burdened with a personal problem of this magnitude Flt Lt Carruthers may well have been excused for giving something less than maximum attention to his job. This has not however been the case. Despite his intense concern for his wife’s welfare, Flt Lt Carruthers has sacrificed his personal interests and has worked much longer hours than could have reasonably been expected of any officer. By personal example, he has evoked the maximum effort from an overworked and undermanned accounts flight and in his dealings with the personnel of the Squadron, officers and airmen alike, he has attained a level of understanding of quite exceptional proportions. The men exhibit the utmost confidence in his capacity to give sympathetic hearing, pertinent advice and prompt action. Their confidence is indeed well founded and Flt Lt Carruthers’ contribution to the general welfare and morale of the Squadron as a whole has in consequence been extremely valuable. This officer’s display of fortitude and dedication to duty under the most trying circumstances is in the very best traditions of the RNZAF. Errol

Neil was the flight sergeant at the Wigram Comcen when I graduated as a teleg in 1965. A quietly spoken SNCO who looked after his troops. RIP Neil a good innings indeed.

Errol Hmm, following up Peter's observation about birth date and age it would appear that the deceased gent may actually be Walter John Wagtendonk, and possibly the father of Walter John Craigie Wagtendonk - both living at the same address in the 1978 electoral roll.
