In lieu of flowers, donations to Gisborne RSA would be appreciated and may be posted C/- PO Box 877, Gisborne. -- Evans Funeral Services Ltd, FDANZ www.evansfuneral.co.nzDeaths - Saturday, April 28, 2012 The above from the Gisborne Herald Death Notices. I attended his funeral today where we were told that he trained as a pilot in New Zealand and served with the RNZAF before being posted to the RAF as an instructor. He was on two operational sorties in bombers, one where he dropped a heavy bomb and the other where a German city was bombed - something he did not enjoy doing. Towards the end of the war he was posted to Ceylon where he was based in Colombo as part of Transport Command. He was involved in transporting VIPs to Japan for the surrender at the end of the war. After the war he became a school teacher, spending some time in the Solomon Islands. He eventually settled in Gisborne where he was a school teacher and citrus farmer before retiring, spending the latter years of his life in Gisborne.

I can find no reference, in the works that I have relating to the Battle of Britain, to R.A. McGowan being shot down and injured on September 15th, 1940. He is listed as a member of No.46 Squadron, but there is no evidence that he became a casualty in the Battle.

I think from memory Roy told me that he'd never gone to the Guinea Pig Club reunions because he lived outside of Britain most of the postwar, in Germany, Singapore and then NZ. So this could be why he never gets a mention in books?

He definitely did and had the burns to prove it. I have seen a photo of him under treatment with other Guinea Pigs. I do not doubt that Roy McGowan was treated for burns at some point in his wartime service. What I am saying is that he did not suffer those burns on Sept. 15th 1940, nor at any time during the Battle of Britain (10th July to October 31st, 1940) as far as I can tell from two respected books on the subject, namely ' The Battle of Britain-Then and Now ' edited by Winston G.Ramsey and ' Battle of Britain Day-15 September 1940 ' by Dr Alfred Price.
