ROPE, Douglas Bryce (known as Bryce). NZRAF F/O NZ432224. On 2 March 2013, he passed away peacefully after having just celebrated his 90th Birthday. Dearly loved husband of Adrienne, beloved father of Charmaine, Derek, Sheridan and Fiona. A private cremation has been held according to his wishes. 'Fly low and slow' Bryce. Never forgotten, loved always ROPE, Bryce. The Old Boys of Auckland Grammar School are honoured to have shared in the life of Douglas Bryce Rope (Form 3 1937). After attaining many sporting records and leadership roles at AGS, Bryce went on to a successful career with the RNZAF and then NZ Rugby, becoming coach and selector for the All Blacks. Steve Shimmin was a volunteer at the RNZAF Museum, was "on duty" until VERY recently. He had a long postwar career as aircraft engineer with Air NZ to best of my knowledge, a very fine fellow too. David D

Died peacefully at Oakwoods Village, Nelson on Friday March 8, 2013 in his 97th year. Beloved husband of Shirley and the late Elliot. Loved father and father-in-law of Alan (Tiki) and Anne, Eila and Warren, Sally and David. Loved stepfather to Annie and Codge, Jill and Guy, Grant and Gaye, and Dina. Loved grandfather and great-grandfather of his extended family. A well respected and dear friend to many. A service to celebrate the life of Alan will be held at St Matthews Anglican Church, Church Street, Masterton on Wednesday 13 March, 2013 at 2:00pm followed by interment. NZ2155 & 133266; Born Masterton, 9 May 1916; NZ Army/TF (19th Medium Bty NZA) 1935 to 1938; RAF 27 Jun 1938 to 31 Dec 1944, 41012; RNZAF 1 Jan 1944 to 30 Jan 1946, Res. 20 Sep 1958 to 9 May 1971; Pilot. Citation Distinguished Flying Cross (22 May 1941): [23 Sqn RAF (Blenheim)] This officer has been employed with the squadron since April, 1939, and since the beginning of the war has carried out numerous operational flights including convoy escorts, often in bad weather conditions. On other occasions he has carried out attacks on aerodrome buildings dropping his bombs from a low altitude in the face of heavy ground fire. Throughout he has displayed great zeal and determination. Citation Bronze Star Medal (US) (10 Dec 1944): The President of the United States of America, authorised by Executive Order, February 4, 1944, has awarded the Bronze Star Medal to: WING COMMANDER ALAN A GAWITH, ROYAL AIR FORCE for meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy: Wing Commander Gawith, Royal Air Force, performed meritorious service from April to December 1944 in the European Theater of Operations. As Senior Royal Air Force Liaison Officer to the IX Air Defense Command, he, with great energy and tact, rendered invaluable service to the United States Army Air Forces in co-ordinating the activities of this Command with those of associated Royal Air Force units. Wing Commander Gawith’s outstanding ability and unusual devotion to duty, in the application of his extensive operational background, particularly with respect to co-ordination of night fighter and anti-aircraft artillery operations, were of great assistance in pre-invasion planning and in the subsequent field operations of the Command. Flew 88 sorties at night with 23 Sqn RAF (Blenheim) Sep 1939-Jul 1941. Crewed with Fg Off C L M Forsyth (qv). Flew on Turbinlite operations with 1451 Flt RAF (Havoc) Jul-Dec 1941. GAWITH, Flight Sergeant Peter Masters, DFM. NZ402444; Born Masterton, 19 Mar 1919; RNZAF 9 Jul 1940 to (kao) 29 Jul 1942; Pilot. Citation Distinguished Flying Medal (18 Jul 1942): [3 Sqn RAF (Hurricane)] This airman has participated in many operational sorties, both by day and night. He has taken part in successful intruder operations against the enemy in Germany and German occupied territory. He shows great keenness at all times to engage the enemy and has destroyed 2 aircraft and damaged 2 others. By his courage and initiative he sets an excellent example. Brother of Wg Cdr A A Gawith, above. Kao on an intruder patrol and lost near Noordwijk-Binnen, north of the Hague, 28/29 Jul 1942 with 3 Sqn RAF (Hurricane) on his 37th sortie. Dutch eyewitnesses reported that at 2245 hrs an RAF ‘Hurribomber’ attacked the Luftwaffe base at Gilze-Rijen dropping three bombs and causing large fires and explosions. On its next sweep over the airfield at 900-1200 feet an intense flak barrage opened up and the Hurricane was seen to depart apparently in a damaged condition. It was not heard of or seen again. No known grave. Commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

CULLOTY, Harley Francis John (Jack). 24 March 1921 - 11 March 2013. (RNZAF NZ416058-CPL Wireless Operator / Pilot Trainee; NZART Callsign: ZL1AJ; Member RAOB Lodge 166 Arapuni: RAOB Waikato Knights' Chapter No 9.) Jack passed away suddenly at Waikato Hospital at 7.45pm Monday 11 March 2013 at the great age of 91. Blessedly released from recent suffering. He was the beloved husband of the late Mildred Emilie Culloty (nee Barr), and loving and much cherished father of Lorraine Culloty Morris and Dorothy Culloty, super- supportive and understanding father in law of David (Dai) Morris and Kees Sprengers, loving mentor of grandson Thomas Morris and his partner, Natalie Broadhead. Air Marshal Ewen Jamieson has died after a battle with cancer in Taupo.
His funeral and cremation is on Monday 25th at 2pm at Founders Chapel Taupo.
