BUTCHER Maurice. Died 23-07-2013.
About seven or eight years ago I met Maurice at a social event. Sadly he was already in a reasonably advanced dementia state. We got to talking about WWII - and he mentioned that he flew P51's in the (North?)Pacific with the Americans. Alas during further brief meetings he would/could not talk about the topic.
Has anyone come across the Maurice's name in their research ?
Thanks Kiwi172

Errol I stand corrected - my files had this man's surname spelt incorrectly, He was: NZ45961 Maurice BUTCHER, who enlisted as an an aircraft hand (general duties) on 10 Mar 1945. A little bit late I should think to be flying P-51s in the Pacific. Errol

Just some additional informatio here:
A military funeral will be held for SGT Grant (Grunta) Sutherland at Ohakea on Wednesday 141400 August 2013. Prior to the service there will be an opportunity for personnel to pay their respects privately at the Chapel from 1130 until 1300. Grant's casket will be open during this period. Personnel wishing to attend the service are requested to be seated in the gym by 1355. The service is planned to take one hour, during which personnel will be given an opportunity to speak if they wish to do so. This opportunity will also be allowed during the evening in the W/O's and SNCO's Mess for personnel who would prefer that setting. Following the service in the gym, Grant will be accompanied to the chapel by bearers and an escort party. The party will stop at the Officers' Mess roundabout where a haka will be performed and an Iroquios flypast will be undertaken. Personnel from the service will have time to place a poppy and move from the gym to line the route to the chapel. Personnel in uniform are to salute the hearse as it passes their position. Grant will enter the chapel with a firing party salute and remain to 'have one last drink with his friends' during afternoon tea, to be held in the W/O's and SNOC's Mess. Following afternoon tea, the Mess will host an all ranks function for the remainder of the evening. Donation boxes will be available if personnel wish to make donations to the Missing Wingman Trust or the Whanganui Hospice. Dress is 3 SDs with ribbons. We are in the process of sourcing black mourning arm bands and these will be made available at the gym entrance on the day. The Duty Officer will have a number of room keys should personnel wish to stay on Base, or the ability to provide transport home if necessary. The combined mess will be open for meals, operating under PAYD provisions. A number of roads and/or car parks will be closed from Tuesday through Wednesday to enable the military funeral to be conducted. A quiet period covering the duration of the service will be promulgated by OC Operations. Please allow me to pass my sincere appreciation to those personnel involved in planning, preparation and conduct of the associated 'logistics' activity. Regards. WGCDR Phill Bedford | Commanding Officer

Re: Sgt Sutherland. 38 is so young. RIP Sgt, clear skies. I'd been following this on the Facebook page set up for him, as he was known by guys I'd been in the mob with. A truely sad situation, having lost his wife some years earlier. The pics of the service were a great tribute.

I knew Grant well, but hadn't seen much of him in recent years. He was a Junior when we did our Senior (SEQ) course so we were course mates. Him and his first wife Tracey (also died of cancer some years back) took on my wife as a flatmate while on course as she was pregnant with our first child.
