Arthur (Fred) Tucker
One of the charismatic leaders of the RNZAF during his long career. Entered the RNZAF in 1941 and after graduating became an instructor at New Plymouth and Ashburton on Tiger Moths. Did two tours in the South West Pacific the first on Kityhawks and the second on Corsairs. Was instrumental in developing rocket carrying and firing for Corsairs at Ardmore in early 1945. Sent to Japan in 1946 to teach the RAAF how to use rockets on Mustangs. Went to the RN in the UK late 1940s to be trained in aerial weaponry. Was in Air Staff 1952 and sponsored squadron markings for TAF and later 14/75 squadrons. CO of No.75 squadron mid 1950s, then to No.14 Squadron at Tengah with Venoms. Was the CO who had the kiwi painted on the fin of the loaned Venoms. Was the Defence Attache at London for several years and ended up his career as Director of Operations Air Staff mid 1960s. A keen supporter of No.14 Squadron association and maintained a strong linkage with the service in his retirmennt years. For me a mate sadly missed!

Certainly a stand out member of the RNZAF.
There's a No. 14 Squadron Association? Is it still going?
The Rocket Firing School at Ardmore was run by S/Ldr Don Winstone with F/Lt Allan 'Skip' Watson as his deputy in 1945, and then when Winstone left the service Skip took the school over and remained there into 1946. Where did Fred come in there, was he an instructor under the command of those two? Or did he precede Winston as CO?

from The Dominion Post....WWII pilot dies seven decades after facing death off BougainvilleBy TOM HUNT | 1:07PM - Monday, 20 April 2015WWII pilot Group Captain Fred Tucker at his home in Karori in 2012. — Photo: Kent Blechynden.A CELEBRATED World War II pilot has died just eight days out from Anzac Day.
Captain Fred Tucker, OBE, a member of the RNZAF, was shot down in the sea off Bougainville in April 1944, then spent hours in the water thinking he was being circled by sharks.
He survived the incident, and the war, and then another seven decades.
Tucker died surrounded by family, on Friday in Wellington. He was 93, a three-decade air force veteran, who served in WWII then in Malaya in the late 1950s.
Son Greg Tucker said his father made each Anzac Day dawn service, where he would remember family and friends lost in war. For the past 15 years his children had taken him down.
This Anzac Day, health permitting, would have been no different.
The official cause of death was pneumonia but according to Greg Tucker, “it was really he just got old”.
But it seemed likely he would still be represented at Saturday's dawn service by his family, who planned to go along with his impressive array of medals.
They include a military OBE from 1975, a Distinguished Flying Cross for air operations in Malaya in 1958, a 1945 Pacific Air Operations Medal, and others.
He signed up with the air force in August, 1941 to join World War II and did not retire from in till 1973 by when he was Group Captain and second in charge of the Defence Force.
He was 22 in April, 1944, when he led a formation of four aircraft in a low-level strafing attack against the Japanese defences at Kieta Harbour, on the northern coast of Bougainville and got shot down by anti-aircraft fire.
“At high speed I pulled up and out to sea in a zoom climb with oil and smoke obscuring my windscreen and vision,” he recalled in 2012.
“My intention very clearly was not to land in Japanese territory and be captured with a one-way ticket to nowhere. My engine exploded and I bailed out.”
He ended in the sea — where he faced further worries.
“The sea became rougher. After two or three hours of being teased by the fear that I was being circled by a shark I discovered on being forced closer to the small black triangle which was concerning me that the culprit was, indeed, a small floating log. I straddled it for the remainder of my swim.”
After about four hours in the water, he was rescued by an American Catalina flying boat.
Group Captain Tucker will be farewelled at St Mary's Church in Karori at 11am on Wednesday.www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/wellington/67871476/wwii-pilot-dies-seven-decades-after-facing-death-off-bougainville

Hi Dave,
I think the No.14 Squadron association is an informal group of ex squadron members that Fred used to contact on a regular basis. His tour at Ardmore in 1945 was as an instructor, where he helped develop some of the technique as the American rocket mounts were 'stub' ones not like the RAF ones that were longer rails. It was this knowledge that he took to Japan to instruct the RAAF and RAF on that form of mounting and aiming

He must have been part of the Rocket Firing School staff then. Don and Skip were training members of No.s 14 and 15 Squadrons in rocket firing at Ardmore before they went to Japan, although i believe the original intention for the school was to train rocket firing to the pilots who were to convert to Mustangs (which never happened).
