I read a Tornado crashed this week. Indeed one did Dave, a Lossiemouth based GR4 went down in the sea off the west coast of Scotland. Both crew members banged out & are in good shape. Gents - thanks for posting these fab pics of the final Skyhawk flights.... I was at the disbandment parade in 2001 & it remains one of the saddest days in my life

Great info guys. Has anyone heard any more on their fate? Surely something is to be announced soon. If anyone is interested I am SADLY selling my Alpha helmet that Munro used on A-4's on Trade Me www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=351436168. I hope this isn't seen as a selling pitch here(remove it if you like Dave), but I know there are some genuinely interested Skyhawk guys reading this. It is only to finance more Auster parts for my rebuild, I would dearly love to keep it but I just have too many things that equal plane parts or rebuild hours. Does anyone know if Mr Munro is still about here in NZ?? I would like him to know his old helmet is still floating around....it would seem right that he knew. Cheers Anthony

If this 'Munro' is the same one I'm thinking of, I would like to meet him and shake his hand one day. He flew a TA-4K at an air show at Canberra airport in 1991, and it was one of the best low level, high energy displays I think I have ever seen performed by an RNZAF Skyhawk. Part of the display involved a mock attack on an ex-Army Centurion tank, and at one point the TA-4K came in so low that the bloke sitting up in the gunners turret hatch involuntarily ducked down. ;D

Wow, that sounds LOW. A Centurion isn't exactly tall.

I was there that day with 2 Sqn. I recall "Blood" got a telling off after his display He was only a junior squadron "Bog Rat" and wasn't an authorised low level display pilot! He was only supposed to do a few simulated attack runs on the tank but the cloud base was very low so he "had" to stay down in the weeds ;D From memory we had the aircraft fully loaded up with weapons too so it looked very "wary". That was our first airshow in Aussie. Calum might also remember it. Do you have any photos of that day Craig?

Hi guys
Thanks for all the feedback. I had no idea the interest this would generate. There is an insane number of watchers on the auction and now a bid. Thanks S2K I really appreciate it. I have replied with my cellphone number, I really hope he calls me. I have just arrived back to my motel unit and have seen a bid has been placed.
This is become a little stressful for me and I feel torn as to how this will go.... I am even starting to wish I had not listed it. But rebuilding an old aircraft (as I am sure you can all appreciate) is not cheap and I really need to reinvest this money.
I will keep you all posted on the outcome. Sorry to hijack the thread.
Cheers Anthony

Know how it feels Anthony, I have a ALPHA as well complete with P type oxy mask c/w comms and some spares. One day intended for a display head in my 'den' if we build a house. Sometimes I think of flicking it off instead but its too hard to bear thinking of seeing it go.

You can always withdraw it before auction closes.... Ian got my message and remembers the airshow and "the chat with the Boss afterwards"

I recall I took a few photos on the day, but all with a small point and shoot 35mm camera. I don't think I took any aerial shots, but I know there are ground shots packed away in a box somewhere. I will try and find them in the next few weeks. Of the armament on the TA-4K, I do remember there was at least one Maverick onboard, as I recall noticing the white tape stuck over the 'US' part of 'US Air Force' on the body of the Mav. Dave, I should have probably worded my last comment better. The guy in the turret hatch ducked when the Skyhawk pulled up, rolled inverted and pulled down towards the Centurion, rolled upright again and pulled into a turn away from the tank. A great display that made up for the cold wind, low cloud and occasional drizzle. I hope the carpeting by the boss wasn't too bad. I'm guessing someone at Canberra airport complained to the RNZAF? Don't mean to sound like a planespotter, but was the TA-4K NZ6252? I seem to remember heaps of Aussies asking if it was one of the ex-RAN ones!

I do recall the weather was crap and he got told off when he got home. My main memory of the day was starting the aircraft with a heap of people standing about 10-15 metres behind it, even after we’d told them they should move. Several guys were leaning into the jet blast taking photos directly into the exhaust. I remember another good beat up done by Scott Armor leaving East Sale in 1992. IIRC the boss had a word with him after that as well. That was one very ugly trip
