Andrew (Agviser1970) has provided a wonderful Course photo from ITW Wereroa, as part of research he is doing on his cousin, Ewen Elmslie (P/O Ewen McGregor Elmslie, RNZAF NZ417200, Bomb Aimer, 75 (NZ) Sqdn). Another wonderful group photo from ITW Wereroa (Levin), from March or April of 1941. "March" is written in pencil on the back, and this would fit with some of the enlistment and embarkation dates for individuals in the photo. This appears to be a combined class photo, made up of 19 (or possibly 19 and 20) Observers Course, and 20 W/Op - Airgunners Course. It came from the collection of Jack Moller DFM (75 (NZ) and 156 (PFF) Sqdns), and his son, Tony Moller very kindly allowed me to copy it and reproduce it here. Jack trained initially as a Wireless Operator at ITW, and then in Canada, before re-training as a Bomb Aimer in the UK. He is second row from the front, 13th from the left (looking to our right). Again, a list of signatures is preserved on the back, although these may only be from the Airgunners Course, going by the inscription. I have tried to decipher the names, and where possible, have used Google to see if I can add more detail. If anyone can fill in any of the gaps, or correct names and/or spellings, that would be great! Interestingly, Corporal Timothy Robert Cotter (Instructor, Armaments) appears again - sixteenth from left, front row, and centre front, photo Section 2 - he was also in the Course 30 photo (21 January 1942) above (centre, front). I have split the photo into four sections so individual faces are identifiable. Sorry about the fold! Hi everyone, I'm looking for course photos of my late great uncle, Flt Lt Eric Witting, NZ415212, DOB: 28/8/20, Home town, Invercargill. From his service file he enlisted at ITW Levin on 7/9/41 as a LAC, A/Pilot U/T, Group 5. He then went on to No 1 EFTS at Taieri, Course No 22, 18/10/41-29/11/41 (I have a photo of this course thanks to Matthew at the Air Force Museum). Then on to Canada on 17/12/41 on the USAT Mariposa. Arrived at No 3 SFTS Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Course No 46, 2/1/42. He then went to the UK and after 11OTU and 1657 HCU was posted to 75 Sqn on 4/9/43, completing his tour in May 44. I have quite a few photos and info on his time on 75 Sqn, so it is the earlier training that I am looking for. Any photos or info much appreciated. don.simms@xtra.co.nz

An interesting anniversary that has almost passed unnoticed today. The Levin municipal aerodrome officially gained authorisation to operate as an airfield on the 11th of July 1935, 80 years ago today

What info do we have on the Levin Municipal Aerodrome? Is that the same as Weraroa/Kimberley?

As I understand it, it was across the road from, or adjacent to, Wereroa facility that became the Air Force Base. Prior to the war Wereroa was a boys training college for farming, I think. The Air Force took over the school and the airfield. For a while they operated Hudsons and Oxfords from there, as well as a strip for communications aircraft.

Dave I think we are talking about different sites. When I did a search a few years ago the map I had showed a Boys Correctional Farm on the other side of SH1 in CD Farm Road with a landing strip close by. There still are institutional looking buildings there today. From a 40 year old newspaper cutting , they list
1929 Chichester flights Tararua Rd 1931 Southern Cross flights CD Farm Rd 1933 Levin Aero Club South side Tararua Rd 1940 Kimberley Air Station Little flying many dummy planes 1948 Aero Club reforms at the "old " airfield in Tararua Rd
From todays maps Tararua Rd is one block closer to Levin than Kimberley so the airfield presumably ran between the two. The only other thing is that CD probably stands for Childrens Correctional ( Borstal )

Thanks to this thread floating to the surface I've just come across the wonderful photos posted in November 2013 of Observer course 19 at Levin. Thanks very much for posting those, fwx. I understand that my mother's cousin, Ron O'Neil, was in that course (10/2/41 - 11/4/41), though I have only one photo of him (taken later, probably in the UK) and haven't managed yet to match him to any of the figures in the posted photo.
He served with 57 Squadron and was shot down twice. The first was in June 1942 when his Wellington went into the North Sea. Only three of the six crew survived. After several months of recuperation he was sent back to his squadron, now flying Lancasters from Scampton. He went AWOL for over three weeks on the journey back to base, for reasons we don't know; perhaps he was still getting over the trauma of ditching in the North Sea. He was nearly court-martialled but a sympathetic neuropsychiatrist recommended leniency, which was granted. On the second flight after that his plane was shot down over Hamburg; as far as I can determine actually in the massive Ohlsdorf cemetery in the city. His grave is in the CWGC section of that cemetery, and I laid a poppy on it during a visit last year.

The photo is of a Wireless Operator – Air Gunner’s course, Flight 3A, Course 30, 21 January 1942, Initial Training Wing Wereroa, RNZAF Levin, Levin, NZ. Ewen Elmslie is fifth from right, second row from the front: - Air Force Museum of New Zealand Official photo, courtesy of the Elmslie family. - full size version here 75nzsquadron.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/ewenelmslie-itwlevin-30course-210142.jpg. The exciting part is that it carries signatures of all or most of the men on the back: Dave H has very kindly helped us identify some of the names (including the very first signature, Vice President of the NZ Bomber Command Assn, Bunny Burrows!), and has come up with a list - can anyone help us fill in the gaps?
