Unveiling of a plaque commemorating the site of the former RNZAF Station Levin/Weraroa on Sunday 15 Sep 2024 at 10am
"A dedication plaque will be unveiled at the site of the former RNZAF Station Levin on 15 Sep 24. Some buildings of the original station still exist, as well as the original flag pole where the dedication plaque will be unveiled (outside The George Café). The ceremony will commence at 1000h. The Speldhurst Country Estate now occupies the former RNZAF Station Levin “base side” location of the station.
RNZAF Station Levin operated from 1939 - 1944 and was home to the Initial Training Wing (1939 - 1942), Initial Officer training, Numbers 1 and 10 (Bomber) Operational Training Units operating Hudson aircraft with crews destined for the Pacific. Significantly, it was the location for the first intake of women into the WAAF/WRNZAF. Aircraft from Levin also provided direct support to the training of US Marines at Paekakariki prior to deploying to the Pacific.
Previous Station commanders included: WGCDR Ronald Sinclair – Jan 1942 then RNZAF Station Taieri, Air Commodore Trevor Watts CBE, ED Jan 42-Mar 42, WGCDR Fr Dix mar 42-43, And finally known, WGCDR Arthur Upham DFC."

Hello All, I am researching W/O Ronald Colin MacPherson 417222. He appears on the list of trainees below that attended the Wireless Operator/Air Gunners, who were enlisted at Ground Training School, Levin over the weekend of 27/28 December 1941. Can anyone provide me a photo of this group or Ronald himself? I have his military records from the RNZAF and it does not contain a photograph. I would love to locate one. He flew in squadrons 14, 16, 17, and 486 between 1941 and becoming a POW on 25 May 1945. Any help would be appreciated. If any further details are required please contact me. I am aware he partly named is son after another pilot Frank Skipworth Kirke, 70547, DFC, DCM. If anyone has any details regarding the relationship between Ronald and Frank I'd love to chat. Thanks. Kind regards, Kym Cunningham BnRN Post Grad Dip (specialty Perioperative Nursing), Student of Certificate in Genealogy Research. cunninghamclan@hotmail.com Hi Kym. A most welcome memorial to that ex-RNZAF Station that is often overlooked. Considering that not only was ground training conducted there, but there was also an operational airfield adjacent to SH1 which operated Oxfords and Hudsons
