You should fly the Trislander down the day before for forum members to attend Brendon's hangar forum meet.

Are the Rhino versions any more impressive at an air display than the old ones? Or are they much on a par? Dave, from the RAAF point of view the classic model display has been polished over the years thru the allocation of a dedicated pilot who concentrates (amongst other duties) on the airshow display. I believe the pilot is susually an instructor from the Conversion unit (2OCU)at Willi. Given the Rhino is relatively new to the force and they have fewer of them the display is not as refined but that might change over time. Im not sure of the numbers but the Rhino has more power but is also much bigger so I suspect less agile. This might explain why a lot of the Boeing displays on the Rhino were done with stores on the wings, not clean as with most fighter solo displays. The Rhino though is, as I say, bigger and newer so has appeal in that way. The Rhino display at the Williamtown show I last attended was good but I prefer the classic solo.

Thanks McM. Good to hear we're getting the preferred display. I have only ever seen one Hornet, at Whenuapai in 2009, and it totally blew me away, far more impressive and loud than I expected.

Dave you just book it and have lots of backups, thats what we did with the DC3 , especially as our vets may go sick the day before. We will be at the 75 squadron tent as they are holding their reunion that weekend and Glen has arranged shelter and seats.

Australian Aviation magazine is talking about F-18 flight demonstrationS i.e. plural again. So could be the 4 ship only or for max value ... the 4 .. plus the solo. There certainly was as RAAF solo pilot doing the rounds late last year ie at the November Temora show. One thing they might do however is due to Wanaka a week later just send the sqn for an exercise covering both shows and not have the solo. I dont think the RAAF contribution to Wanaka has been confirmed yet? so then again maybe they won't be at Wanaka and will put all RAAF efforts for Ohakea. late thought..maybe Amberley will do Wanaka with Rhinos... ;D Just reminding people of the discussion and photos of the F-18s practicing at Ohakea prior to WoW 2009. rnzaf.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=photography&action=display&thread=10980&page=1It was four F-18As plus an OCU F-18B (Ritchie's ride!), not sure if that increases the chances of a formation a plus solo display. Remember that they did a tactical display and a formation display at WoW 2009, so that would be 'displays'. Certainly hope we get the solo. Does anyone know the planned layout for the show, especially the crowdline & display line in relation to the sun?

I imagine it would be much the same as the 2008 show. From memory it was something like the attached pic, with the red box representing crowd/statics, and the yellow for parking. Much better for the eyes than Wanaka! Attachments:

Forgot to say, they used the North-South runway, that day everything took off to the north. I think the area for crowd may have been bigger, also.

They used the tarmac in front of 3, 4 and 5 hangars and part of one of the runways. And the car parking was on that paddock near the northern boundary of the base.

We will be heading up in the Nanchang if the weather allows. Really looking forward to it.

Much better for the eyes than Wanaka! You've displaced the areas a little bit. With a couple of exceptions (1984 and 1993) every OH show I recall being at has had parking in the area immediately to the left of that pic, with statics etc in front of the hangars on the extreme left of frame. Now all we need are details of overseas arrival and practice dates and we are sweet. I also saw a Super Hornet display a while ago, and I'm not sure it was better than the current legacy display, just different. Each has their own merits.

Do the two Hornet types sound the same or are the new ones made quieter to modern noise standards?

Do the two Hornet types sound the same or are the new ones made quieter to modern noise standards? The Rhino sounds much louder to me, and because of more power it has a bit more grunt in some segements of its display routine.

The F-18F (Rhino) is also more maneuverable at low air speeds then the legacy Hornet.
Although it has more power, it is heavier as well, the US Navy have asked Boeing to source a more powerful engine at their earliest convenience, they claim at full fuel and ordinance the Rhino has a tough time getting off the pointy end of the carrier on a hot day.

The Rhino is certainly noisier than the legacy Hornet - equally as loud as an F-111 having seen the Boeing Test Pilot's display at Avalon in 2007 & the tamer RAAF display at Williamtown last year.

Rhino US Navy demo at Avalon 2007. More maneuverable at low speed and can do the cobra maneuver although classic does a similar move. I always enjoy the classic F-18 and they really are spectacular in the four ship display. It will be great to see them again in New Zealand. Cheers

Do the two Hornet types sound the same or are the new ones made quieter to modern noise standards? Modern noise standards don't seem to apply to combat aircraft - the F-35 is apparently even louder then anything currently in service
