Just bought my ticket for myself, wife and 9 year old, now we just need to find accommodation close enough but it is so expensive, we'll need two nights and so far we have a choice of sleeping in the tent or spending at least $200+ on accommodation alone, that's on top of petrol there and back as well as food and any souvenirs.
The fun and excitement is fast starting to be sucked out of the whole thing.

So you didn't know petrol, food and accomodation was expensive before you bought your tickets?
You don't have to go to the show - You can sell your tickets and presumably be happier?

Not complaining mate, just commenting, I'm not blaming anyone or pointing the finger and demanding compensation from someone, just stating the obvious, it's called conversation.
Seems only yesterday I was a kid and getting all excited for the big air show and never had to worry about these things before, can see now why my parents never had the same enthusiasm I did.
This will be my sons first trip South of Ohakune and my first trip to Ohakea since 1999, so yeah having not done too much traveling too far from home it seems as if these kinds of expenses have all added up and snuck up on me. up till now I've just been thinking of the ticket price and possible food at the show, I suppose that's habit from all the Whenuapai shows we've had here in the past.
Oh well, we only live once and I'm sure this will be an awesome air show.

It was never the $10 cost of the ticket that put me off. You would never get cheaper there.

Maybe - Just up to here with moaning today!
I'm travelling from the South Island, yes it will cost a few bob with the Mrs - them are the breaks.
If you think it will not be that flash and too expensive then stay at home - no one is making anyone attend.

I think that's where the surprise of cost came into it, I am used to driving to Whenuapai for the day, paying $10 and that's that, but it is actually a mini holiday, getting right out of Auckland and going somewhere completely different to normal, it's going to be awesome.

Hello all, I am new to this site and have been following this thread with great anticipation of the show.
As for the line up, it looks like it's going to be a great one. Glad to hear the RAF has confirmed. I am really hoping that the Tristar might turn up, as it did for the 50th in '87. I'm an airliner enthusiast, so a 3 holer like a Tristar is the holy grail!
But if the E-3 comes then that's just as good, as the ol' boeing is a grand sight. Would be extra nice if a VC-10 came, but I know that it's wishful thinking. I vividly remember the VC-10 at the '81 Ohakea show. I was 8 years old.
Gosh I love those tankers and airlifters! Can't wait guys!
regards George

Thank you Dave.
beagle, yes I remember the KC-135, it was parked near the VC-10. Maybe that's where my passion for the haulers comes from eh?
Just found some posts on the site that have photos from the show, funny thing is I can't at all remember the F-15 or F-4. But I remember the loos! Certainly not the port-a-loos of today!
But back to Ohakea 2012. Looking forward to seeing the USMC KC-130. My boys are looking forward to the C-17, they remember it well from Whenuapai 2009. Does anyone know if Air New Zealand will have a presence? Hopefully something a little bigger than the Beechcraft 1900 this time.
F-18s will be good to see again - first ones I ever saw were Whenuapai '87. Not sure if it's already been mentioned but are the Aussies bringing the F-18A or the F?
Please RAF bring the Tristar!!!!!
George

You know, for the USAF's 50th Anniversary airshow, the RAF flew a C-130 to the USA and inside was their Spitifre Mk V, which displayed at the airshow.
If they bring a Hercules or any big transport, it'd be great if something comes inside it.

Sorry but chances of anything inside a transport must be a smidgon above zero.
Also RAF crews I don't think will have worked up their displays for this year yet - all that trouble for a static spit when NZ has two flying - I don't think so.

Wow, we have got out to 17 pages on this and the show is more than a month away As for the travel thing, Ohakea is one of only two airshows available for me that I don't have to travel for, something that I am grateful for. Whenuapai, Ardmore, Tauranga, Omaka et al all require planning and expenditure if I want to get there (the last Wanaka I went to was in 2004). Ironically this is now creating a slight logistic headache of it's own in wanting to come up to see what may be a practice day on the 30th, go to the forum meet that night, then come back the next day for the show. We might wind up staying with family in Palmy

How far is it to drive from Auckland to Ohakea?
Would Wellington people do it as a day trip?

It's shaping up to be a great airshow, just have some curious questions!
RNZAF: Now that the Skyhawk/MB339 situation has finally been sorted out, will the RNZAF be displaying one of their MB339's (the ones retained for the GTW)? I sure hope so i.e. surely it's still not politically incorrect to show one in public now, now that the RNZAF will be retaining some of them? Ditto the static display Skyhawk?
ADF: Great to see the RAAF here in presence. Looking forward to seeing the Wedgetail in particular. Pity an AP-3C can't make it. But one thing I noticed is that there are no ADF Helicopters - pity an camouflaged Army Blackhawk or RAN Seahawk couldn't get a ride over in their C-17!
USMC C-130/KC-130, interesting to see the USMC return. Anyone know from which squadron or air station the herc will be coming from?
Finally the good ol' airfeild attack - obviously something that won't be occurring (since the demise of the ACF) but I was wondering whether the RNZAF were still doing airfeild attacks up to the demise of the ACF?
