I never realised just how far away from things we are here.
I can understand a military power not wanting to commit to the expense of sending a fighter type all this way. They have there own summer display circuits to get through also.
Many of these types mentioned here are seen regularly at the various airshows. While I have not been to Paris (don't enjoy France) I have been to Farnborough and similar shows often enough.
The good thing about Farnborough is that it is generally the weekend before the Octoberfest starting weekend. Just a few weeks holiday and you can take in so much. I still have not seen all of the Deutches Museum despite many trips to Munich.
The good airshows are just a day away..... 24 hours flying..... I am not sure I would bother with the expense of going to Ohakea...
For just a few dollars more you can travel to someplace a little more attractive than the Manawatu.
Have you seen the Air Asia fares to Europe ? I can be halfway there for the cost of a ticket to Palmy..

Isn't Air Asia pulling out of the UK and Europe at the end of March?

I didn't know that Don. I have been using them a bit. From ChCh up into Asia and then onwards has been so good. Even ChCh to Darwin via KL compared favourably with the more direct route offered by the usuals.
It is just that for the past few years the international travel has never been cheaper. I will be going to Wanaka, and I know many Aussies that make the trip.
That is not good news about Air Asia, I will have to look into it. They were just opening routes out of Dawin also. Bugger.

It is just the Europe and UK routes they are pulling out of I think. A bummer as we were going to go to the UK with them this year. We used them to go to Chch-KL-Chch last year for 2 weeks holiday and the money we saved on air fares paid for all our hotels over there.

Aside from the Aussie F18, the list of aircraft attending from the Forces looks pretty average. From the RNZAF press release this week it looks like the Warbirds will left to put on a good show. .

Man I'd love to see a Tornado in action. Those ones in the Gulf War were great, I loved Snoopy's Airways especially. Yeah now that would be something to see they are an awesome jet.

It was the Tornado that had me thinking. I just assumed we had all seen them, they are nearing the end of their life in many respects now. While I have not worked on them physically we were certainly studying the systems in 1981, before they came into operational use. Many were flying from Cottesmore with the TTTE though and we got to see them often enough.
That was a lifetime ago, over 30 years. I got to sit in the cockpit of a mock-up of the Eurofighter about the same time. (Well what went on to become the Eurofighter). It would have been well and truly classified back then though.

What was the last RAF aeroplane to attend a New Zealand aishow? Was it the Harrier in 1992? Do they ahve any Lear jet type VIP transports? ...like this? I wonder who the Harrier was being flown by? FLTLT (as he was at the time) Dave Morgan flew a SHAR behind three Skayhawk once. I seem to recall he shot two of them down.

If the F18s are have refuelling probs flying across the ditch why can't the RAAF task a KC30 since they have five of them. I thought they might have sent one over for the airshow. Wonder if the F18 is going to be legacy Hornets or the F18E Shornets.

The kc-30's are not yet operational, still testing. IOC think expected late this year. They could still visit airshow like they did at Malaysia, think it was. Re hornets the rnzaf airshow site says legacy model coming. Ie f18A.

Any Hornet is a good Hornet in my opinion.

Any Hornet is a good Hornet in my opinion. Too true, but I still would love to see the mighty F-18F Super Hornet up close, actually at all, I'm still kicking myself for not being able to see them when those 5 came to AKL. I have an acquaintance who got into the tower that day and was able to have a chat with the crews after they parked and got out of the jets, can't remember if he said they got to look at the jets up close or not, still I would have loved to have been able to go and see them and I'll be really disappointed if they don't have one over for this show.

I wonder who the Harrier was being flown by? The pilot was Sqn Ldr Ashley Stevenson. He had ejected twice from Harriers before this airshow according to the official video.

If I recall correctly there were 2 pilots who came with the Harrier. A few days after the show the Harrier came to Ardmore twice (To show off to the Warbirds guys...) as I believe that each pilot wanted a go.....

As I was saying to Baz the other week or so back, it's a shame that with the appearance of ex-RNZAF Corsair and P-40 at the 75th anniversary airshow, the RNZAF is unable to put up any kind of 'Heritage' flypast showcasing the old and 'current' aircraft.
