Again, they'd have been doing that regardless had there been five or four aircraft in service. How many times have they had 2 or more Hercules in deep maintenance at the same time only leaving 3 aircraft available for over 12 months?

Again, they'd have been doing that regardless had there been five or four aircraft in service. Exactly, 5SQN had 3 airframes in service at approximately the same stage of the transition, which presumably reflects what is practical.

The last C-130H Group servicing at Woodbourne was completed by Airbus last week. The aircraft departed Woodbourne the same day the last 3 P-3s retired. A Group is a very expensive servicing (100% contracted out these days). Makes sense to just park them up from now on as they come due. I doubt they have any more than 4 crews available to fly them now anyway. A large contingent of air and ground crew are now in the US training on the new J models and staff resignations back home have decimated the ranks. Many P-3 crew members will be converting to the Herc (those who don't want to go to Ohakea).
