What is the big rectangle box on top of those twin jet things?? Most likely an electronically-scanned radar Dave, similar to Aussie Wedgetails: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_737_AEW%26CThey do look as though they'd make a clacking sound if you spun them around!

I' like to get C17's, at least 4 and 4 C130J's 48 F15E's although they aren't building them anymore so we'll take either 48 Euro fighter or F18F's, probably F18F's so we have parts and training in common with the Aussies, some Hawks too

C17's, too big, operating costs too big. C130J's, too big at times, too small other times we need something slightly bigger than a Herk to carry bigger items to get them there faster than the Canterbury, and also something slightly smaller but not too small. A400 x 4 or 5, C235/295 x 3/3 C295MP x 5 Since we operate a huge maritime area, sometimes speed is essesntial to get out there and the P3 is ok at 375knots, so I am a bit against something like a twin turboprop doing 100 knots slower. P8 would be ok but not too sure regards operating costs compared with P3.

Indeed, but in my world there cost is not an issue, I know, stupid, but they haven't started taxing dreams yet, I just love the C17 and would love to have an awesome air force.
I think we already have the awesome people in place, we just need some new toys is all.

C130J's, too big at times, too small other times How about a local mod to ad a section in the centre of the fuselage that consatinas out for extra length, like a pop-top caravan. ;D Mind you it might fly like a bendy bus. You make a very good point there Beagle, considering that a big part of the Orion's role is rescue work where every minute counts for stricken sailors, having a slower aircraft might mean lost lives I guess.

The A400 is too costly and pricing itself out of the market. It also has to many problems at the moment. We would have to wait until it has IOC with at least 3 or 5 air forces in order to make sure bugs are out of system and unit costs are down.
My suggestion is: 1 x C17 with the Kiwi roundel and a maintenance and replacement aircraft lease agreement with RAAF. More practical. 5 x C130Js. 8 x CN235s / C295s with pods for maritime recce workstations etc (only need 3 - 4 pods). Sensors fitted to all aircraft. 4 - 5 x P8 Poseidon. 12 -1 5 x AW159 Wildcats (5 shipboard [Seasprite replacements], 5 -8 close air support / training,2 -3 maintenance
Problem is NZs debt to GDP ratio is 98.2% so no way in present climate are any politicians going to agree to such a buy . They don't have the foresight, vision of intestinal fortitude.

Get real - two leased Fletchers that are only available on weekdays as they must spread muck on the weekends.
The pilots must wear bright colour boots made by the lead sponsor.
And Daves noseart idea replaced by sponsors logos.
