An addendum because I was thinking about it over night. The hull would have to have a reasonably large magazine for the missiles. They not really a magazine more of canister, see big difference between the Kiwi ANZAC frigate x1 mk41 8 cells and yank areligh Burke x8 mk41 64 cells up forward and x8 mk 41 launchers down aft 64 cells 128 cells in total. Technically you could fit tomahawk on Anzac with a few mods to VLS and huge mod to ship combat system radars . The advantage of active missles opposed to semi active ESSM you save on $ and weight. Purchasing and integrating illuminators, targeting fire control radars that are required to guide missle on path to target with out the illuminator the missle is useless. Active missles gets the initial search area and mid course feed back uses built in radar to find target .Semi active only uses radar for its final approach.

someone mentioned about the RAN leasing a spanish tanker/replenishment ship. Thought they only had HMAS Sirius a few years now. Are they looking at another one as well. Sirius was a replacement for Westralia. its more of a replenishment oiler than an all round replenishment ship like Success. It's a replacement for the latter that is currently being studied. I don't think the RNZN is installing CEAFAR in its ANZAC upgrade because of money, same with the ESSM. Which is short sightedness on NZGs part. The RAN are even installing the full upgrade on the two ANZACs that have been mothballed. We should get CEFAR & ESSM when we replace the ANZACs. The two "mothballed" ANZAC are actually in dock getting the hull modification aspects of the upgrade (including enclosing the quarter deck) completed prior to radar and combat systems work starting later this year. The ANZAC upgrade program will go to 2017 so the RAN will be one or two ANZACs short until that's completed.

Thanks for that Meo4. The graphics put it into perspective. Be a waste of a perfectly good radar system using it to illuminate Uncle Helens face. You might damage the radar and they cost money to fix.

and you would name it the "Helen Clark " too Bugger off and ruin a perfectly good ship. For the life of me I can't imagine any junior ratings wanting that name on their cap tally. Be a cruel and unjust punishment. I am sure there is a law against that. Maybe we could call it the "HMNZS Dave Homewood". Flight deck's big enough to fly a C130 off and it'd be ideal for WONZ Forum members fishing trips. ;D I'm not joking about flying the C130 off a flight deck. The USN trialled it back in the 1960s when they were looking for a COD aircraft before they settled on the C2 Greyhound. There's a video around somewhere. Quite impressive but would've been hard on the nerves. They flew the Herc on and off. It did the take off from a standing start without Jato bottles or use of the catapult. Jeez image the sight of Herc being catapulted off a carrier with Jato bottles blazing away

They need to replace Success at some stage and Sirus hasn't been that sucessful either (despite adding a Helicopter deck they can't operate helicopters off it). I'm sure I read a long time ago (early 2000's) that a 3rd LHD was the RN's preferred replacement for Success.

IIRC Desert Eagle was in 1980 where they lost those choppers and herc in the Iranian desert trying to get in to get embassy hostages out. Was a big Snafu.
