Here is a photo taken at yesterdays open day at Omaka. Another open day will be held on October 8 2011. Was a nice day to just be around old aeroplanes and great people. Arthur Dovey put on two brilliant displays in his Yak 3 and it will display again (depending on weather and serviceablity) on September 8 so time to get planning and be on the field for this if you can. It is not a full on airshow, just a low key open day with some flying thrown in. The AHC website was updated quite a while ago and you can see more info as to what the day involves. www.omaka.org.nz/index.htm

Tempting so tempting......but can't commit to any dates for October as I may be moving the Auster to my hangar. Getting the help organised for the same day is like herding cats. If I decide to go to Omaka that's the day when everyone is free. ::)Ha ha. Would love to go up there, will do once i'm moved in.

Wow it's great to see the two Yaks side-by-side. Have they got different tails? Interesting to see the Frew family's one is a two-seater.

probably a bigger tail due to the two seat configuration maybe? Not sure just guessing.

Yes I wondered that. It's nice to see John's Harvard '41 peeping out of the hangar too.

I saw another photo on Trademe from a different angle and the reason the tails look different is because Arthur Dovey's Yak is parked with full left rudder applied so it looks strange but it is the same rudder and vertical stabilizer.

Their are a few differences as Red 12 is a Yak 11 modification and the other was built using Yak 3 plans, and you will notice the top of the fin is sharper. The rear fuse looks a little wider on Red 12 and the top engine cowling is deeper. They will both be together again on October 8 and are very interesting to compare.

Great stuff Gavin. I love that Bristol Freighter shot. I had forgotten that the ex-Hanna Yak3 was based on a Yak 11. They really look great together and it will be awesome at future airshows to see these two mixing it with the FW190.
Baz, is the Yak 3 being auctioned on TradeMe?

Yep 10 shares at 125K a share............think I'll stick with my little Auster for now!

I found a Danish 20 Kroner coin today, what is that worth in NZ dollars? Gotta be close to a share I reckon?
