Hi all. I've been accepted for enlistment in the RNZAF as a Pilot Under Training on the NZDF Tertiary Scholarship Scheme (TSS). As part of this I'm apparently part of the territorial force for my years of university as an "Officer Cadet". In just over a week I am going down to Woodbourne for a week long "Induction Course" and I was wondering if anyone here had done this before or knows roughly what it involves?

I have no idea but it sounds like good news. Well done.
Would it involve being issued with uniform and learning how to drink irresponsibly.
I very much doubt it will involve hour upon hour of marching about a parade ground.

thanks beeza Yeah I wouldn't expect it to consist of pure drill, maybe the basics but nothing fancy. Regards to uniform, I haven't been told if i have to wear it while studying or not but I think that's the UOS scheme, I'm on the TSS or RUS.

Congratulations mate. That is great news. Please keep us updated with your progress.
I guess an introduction to Military Law and Customs may be included too.

I think RUS is the scheme where you go to uni as a civy, no pay, no uniform etc but expected to do airforce time during the semester holidays etc. In the past, the RUS troops have been through WB doing adventure training etc, but i think that's more 2nd year stuff. The other scheme has you attend IOTC first, graduate as a PLTOFF, then attend uni in uniform, whilst on full pay etc. I'm in WB from sunday for 2 weeks with the ATC National Aviation Course.... will prob see you around the mess at some stage. Ask for Craig and say hi

I've heard that part of the induction involves being injected with Sodium Pentothal and interrogated to find out all your secrets; followed up later by being forced to sing the New Zealand national anthem backwards while sculling a litre of Lion Red at the same time. ;D

So you're going to be on an induction course when Flynn and Callum are on power flying? When you get your uniform, you should come and be the official guest at final parade! hahaha

What Phil said. Whenever you get a posting the new base claims to never have heard of you. It's been that way since the beginning. I think it is a standing joke among the Admin Section to confuse the real workers.

Yep, I have been posted to a Base only to discover the job I was going to had been changed. Found out in the bar the night before I started the new position.
Even had to promote myself once. My rank seniority day arrived and nothing has been said. Checked the mail at lunchtime and still nothing.
I was sure I had my dates correct so went back to the room, affixed my new insignia, congratulated myself and went back to work. The official notification came about two weeks later.
If you can't take a joke you should never have joined up..

. I think it is a standing joke among the Admin Section to confuse the real workers. We don't have admin sections anymore - it's all done out of Upper Hutt.

But they still have that running postings joke, right? It's a tradition. So many WWII RNZAF members told me that they'd turn up at a new base and no-one knew they were coming too, just like in the 1990's.

I think it was common with the communication systems we had in place back in those days. I had a Govt job in Wellington that I was not particularly enjoying. Having heard the stories I thought I would put them to the test. I took advantage of the Xmas confusion, did a bolter, and rocked up at the airport of a new location... a place I did want to work at. Phoned the admin section from the airport and enquired about my transport into town. They sent a car, on the way back to work the driver confided that they had not been expecting me.
I was given the choice of two positions, chose one and worked at it for almost two years before I was tracked down.
Fate is a strange beast.... they phoned up and got heavy.. basically giving an ultimatum. All this within minutes of the mail-run where I had received a letter from the mob confirming my appointment. I would have only had the letter opened about 5 mins before the final phone call.
I am sure the RNZAF guys could manoeuvre about the military systems with equal agility. Cunning and guile come to mind.
