Smoking was banned at Wings Over Wairarapa a few weeks ago.
I don't think there was a designated smoking area either.

Too many pages to troll through and no mention of it on the Airshow website, but is there a fly-in, fly-out option to getting there. Or is it land at NZWB and shuttle over?

It's always surprised me that there are so many fewer people there on Sunday, as more stuff gets blown up!
Besides the FW-190, I'm especially looking forward to the inter-war types.

The latest Press Release: CLASSIC FIGHTERS - A SELL-OUT IN MANY DEPARTMENTS!This year the Classic Fighters Airshow seems to be enjoying record uptake of facilities. Omaka AHC Retail Manager Joanne McMillan has reported that all food stall sites are now sold out and all trade stall sites are likewise now sold out. On the ticket sales front, regular tickets are selling very well with people quickly getting the message that it is better to have pre-purchased tickets on line in order to reduce time queuing at the gate on the day. Gold Pass tickets are selling very well too and in fact the Saturday Gold Pass tickets are all but sold out. These are also going well for the Sunday and the Friday so if you have been delaying your Gold Pass purchases, you'd be prudent to move quickly now. The new Platinum Pass area that offers a deluxe experience on the fence-line with gourmet catering for a table of 10 under a sun umbrella, is also proving very popular and in fact, Platinum Pass options for the Saturday show have also sold out. For those looking for the best experience, there are still some options for the Sunday which, in Show Organiser Graham Orphan's view, is the better day to attend. This is due, if for no other reason, to the appearance on the Sunday of the 'Secret Weapon' (see elsewhere) and the one-off mass fly-over of WW-II fighters and trainers for the show finale at the end of the Sunday flying. FRIDAY NIGHT The popular Good Friday night out at the airshow will be a very different experience this year. The Marlborough Lines Twilight Extreme will this year, start with about an hour and a half of dusk flying programme, followed by a live concert and 'USO Show' featuring period music from both the WW-II era with popular Kiwi songstress Sarah Brown and from the Vietnam era with 'Helter Skelter' playing some favourites from Credence Clearwater revival. The concert will be followed by an unseen attack by 'Charlie', this to be repelled by a massive fireworks display. Should be a great night out! THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN MEETS THE SOPWITH SORTIE.... For the third time, we can look forward to seeing the amazing spectacle of the world's largest gathering of Fokker Triplanes in the air together as the folks from TVAL assemble 'The Magnificent Seven' machines representing the formidable Jasta 11 squadron led by Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron! Once again the allies will be bringing together what machines they have to defend themselves against the Fokker scourge. Whilst such machines as the elegant Bristol F2B Fighter, the unusual D.H.5 and the Nieuport to be seen on the field over the weekend, we will for the first time see the three most significant fighting scouts from Britain's best know WW-I aircraft company. The Sopwith Triplane, Sopwith Pup and the famous Sopwith Camel will all fly together courtesy once again, of the folks at TVAL who only completed two magnificent examples of the Sopwith Pup last year. These and other Great War aeroplanes, will be joined by some amazing period ground vehicles including WW-I tanks, trucks and armoured cars, and a very large contingent of soldiers in battle on the plains in front of the French chateau and its very realistic surrounding vineyards! And the battle begins.... SECRET WEAPON!OK, we'll let the secret out now. Our 'weapon of choice' at Classic Fighters is one of the Third Reich's more daring strategies, and goes by the name of Bachem Ba349 'Natter'. This was a small rocket powered, piloted, aircraft designed to be fired towards the large numbers of US bombers that were being sent from England to carry out daylight attacks on industrial targets in Germany. On approaching the bombers, the pilot could launch his 24 nose-mounted rockets in the hope of destroying as many bombers as possible. The Natter was designed to be launched beside a supporting guide tower to ensure a straight trajectory. Power was provided by a pack of four rocket motors arranged about the tail of the aircraft. Our very clever props team have spent the last few months working on the construction of a very realistic replica of the Natter and the massive 14m (46 feet) tall tower from which an attempt will be made to launch the weapon in the defense of Berlin. This will take place on the Sunday of the airshow and as can be imagined, allied aircraft from the RAF, the US Army Air Force and Russia's Red Air Force will all be trying to destroy the launch site whilst the Luftwaffe's Focke-Wulf and Messerschmitt fighters will be trying to stop them! We can all speculate how this ends, or consult our history books for a better idea! THE NUMBERS GAME...Somehow we find that our parking areas are going to be much more challenged than at our last airshow in 2011. This is especially so with aircraft we already have multiples of. For example, the Nanchang numbers have tripled. The Harvard numbers have nearly doubled with an expected 13 on the field. The Yaks have also grown in number and the Chipmunks have at least doubled. Double the number of de Havillands, double the number of American classics. There will be more WW-I fighters, more WW-II fighters and more RNZAF! By all accounts well over a hundred heritage or display aircraft will be on the field over the weekend, so it is certainly going to be one of the largest gatherings of historic aircraft yet seen in one place south of the Equator. Wah Hoo!! EXTENDING THE HAND OF FRIENDSHIP....We're delighted to be able to announce a late addition to the flying line-up. The folks from NZ Post/Express Couriers have kindly made available a Fokker F-27 Friendship for display at this year's show. This may be a late inclusion but it's one we're delighted to be able to bring to pass as we are going to be celebrating 20 years of these aircraft plying their nocturnal route throughout the country, delivering the mail. Sadly, some 58 years since it first flew, the Friendship is quietly being phased out of service all over the world and so the time remaining for the F-27 to be seen in New Zealand skies, is pretty limited. Of course, since most of their flying in this country over the past couple of decades has been at night time, we reasoned that people just don't get to SEE these aircraft flying so before it's too late, we wanted to feature a Fokker Friendship display just once before they are gone for keeps. The good folks from NZ Post/Express Couriers totally agreed with the sentiment and have been kind enough to make the aircraft available for this purpose. Visitors who have not seen a Friendship in the air for a long time will, we are sure be surprised and impressed when they see what this familiar workhorse can do! BEECH WARE...We've been really looking forward to seeing the Beech Staggerwing that has been under restoration for Cam and Tracey Hawley at the southern end of the South Island. Just yesterday the final touches to her outer garments were revealed for all to see. What a stunning machine she is, wearing exactly the some colours she carried when delivered new to the Loneragan family of Mudgee, NSW, in 1936. The aircraft is due to arrive at Omaka mid next week. Owner Cam Hawley, who is something of a Staggerwing historian himself, is producing an exclusive feature on the aircraft to appear in a forthcoming edition of Classic Wings magazine. We are all excited about seeing the aircraft here at Omaka where it is set to reside for a while after the show. We're also hoping to have this 1936 C-17B parked next to Eric Hertz' 1947 G-17 to provide a good comparison between the models. What beautiful aeroplanes these are! I have never seen a civil Friendship displayed, and have not seen one displayed at an airshow since the days of NATTS at Wigram, so I am looking forward to the F-27 display.

The first time I ever set eyes on a Fokker Friendship was at the big airshow at the opening of Wellington Airport in 1959 when I was five-and-a-half years old. I can still vaguely remember the Friendship that was there (along with a Handley Page Herald). I was at the airshow with my Mum's cousin, Alan Macauley of Aviation Radio.

Well I've been lurking around the forums here for a little while, enjoying the posts and the podcasts ( thanks Dave ). I'm very excited, been anticipating coming to Classic Fighters for nigh on 10 years, visited the museum and Wanaka about 5 years ago and the Wairarapa airshow in 2011... This is the year. What makes it even more special for me is I'm coming over with my 13 year old son and a couple of great mates. Staying at Wither Hills. And we lashed out for Gold Passes ( the $AUD helps here , I'm very keen to to take some nice shots of the WW1...i'm hopeful of a good turnout, I notice there is no DV on the programme though.......sigh. Can someone advise whats the position of the sun throughout the day please.....or any favourite spots ! ....Either on the airfield or on the perimeter ? Also any good meeting places after the show? Once again ... Really looking forward to it. Dino

Hey Dino welcome aboard the madness! If I recall correctly the sun is mostly behind you as you face the display line. Most of the really good photographers on here seem to have take a lot of their shots from the Gold Pass grandstand! I'm sure some of the more experienced chaps can give you a few ideas.

Welcome Dino.
There is no access to the preimeter fences outside of the airshow area boundary, so don't attempt it as security will throw you out. The sun is behind you all day pretty much, unless it is like the 2011 show when there was no sun. ;D

Thanks Dave and Baz
I was meaning more along the lines of being near landing approaches etc from for example outside the field which sometimes yield different perspectives..certainly not trying to do anything illegal.
Anyhow sounds like the place to be is in the paddock ,
See you there gentlemen.
