I participated in the Birdman Rally two years running (1978 and 1979). I flew in self-made plastic-and-aluminum-tubing hang gliders. At the 1979 Rally, I won the Best Young Entry (farthest flight for a person under the age of 15) for "flying" ten meters into the waters of Auckland's Queen's wharf from the top of an improvised platform. The TV coverage resulted in my getting a fair amount of ribbing from my friends at Papatoetoe High School, but it was good fun nonetheless. My prizes were a stuffed kangaroo toy, a Qantas flight bag, and a book on New Zealand natural wonders.
Are there any other former participants from the Birdman Rallies out there?

The birdman challenges of the 70's and 80's were a fun and fostered a wonderful community spirit...... not seen so much these days due to the Nana State we've slowly become over the past 20 years.... I never Flew a craft in any of the competitions... but photographed this one..... resurrected thread for your enjoyment rnzaf.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Modelling&action=display&thread=16613
