One of my favorite resident aircraft at Auckland airport, love the scream of the rollsroyce darts! . why do they have to make quiet commercial aircraft thesedays. I like loud and noisy send them out over my house I'll be very happy ;D

When I was based in Wgtn I used to watch the F27s taking off from the airport and as they came off the runway by the main drag between Kilbirnie & Miramar they'd look quite "wary" when seen nose on. I like my flights in them having done quite a few & Wgtn could be an interesting landing.

Our NATS ones were the earlier models and from what I have been told did not have too much power in reserve in case of emergency. Any truth there ?

Well....they were a little bit of both. The exhaust used to provide thrust.

Yes it did. The figures we were given for the RDa6 were 1670 hp of which 70 came from effective thrust. Well that is from 30 year memory anyway.

Has anyone snapped ex Air NZ FK27-500 ZK-NAO looking somewhat forlone at Auckland? Seems it is slowly being dismantled after an engine problem a few weeks ago and deemed uneconomical to repair. Perhaps a candidate for a museum in the area?

NAO was due for a D check, costing more than the value of the aircraft.

If NAO was to be preserved, in what livery should it be preserved?

NAO is being farmed out for parts so good luck with any preservation efforts. I think if it were to be magically preserved then it should wear its NAC scheme.

You'd need to rattle your dags - ZK-NAO at AA today. Its getting smaller.

Looks like this one got away...would have looked good in "Wings of the Nation" orange scheme.

Looks like this one got away...would have looked good in "Wings of the Nation" orange scheme. I agree with you there. That livery is also my favorite. Note: pic taken from "NAC: The Official History of New Zealand National Airways Corporation 1947-1978" by Richard Waugh (ISBN 978-0-473-12000-9)
