The Brits certainly did it and shared the info with NAA then out pops the P-51B. All the hard yards were done in the UK.

I make no claims to being a Mustang expert (we have people for that) however while doing some fact checking for a recent P-51D book, and an A-36 book, I don't recall any reliable data of actual US work on Merlin/Mustang, though I vaguely recall comment that it may have been considered. The original RR Derby conversion was pretty poor design in infrastructure though, and it was NAA who shoehorned the engine - and more critically the radiator - in properly to continue to take advantage of the Meredith Effect. I was amazed while fact-checking how much there was still to say on that machine, and how some well established facts - aren't. More amusingly, at American shows it's all about 'the greatest fighter of W.W.II', and later a mention of a rather nice engine. At British airshows I start counting, and before we get to ...9, 10, we have about how it was rubbish until the Rolls Royce was put in. I did that while with an American friend at a UK show and he thought I had a fix in with the announcer. Globetrotting's fun. My Canadian friends were very tolerant of my (loud, unprintable) comments to their claim that their Sabre was 'the best', though I think gold's a pretty good colour for a Sabre if you can't have 30mms and an Avon. Regards,

Commentary I thought was outstanding. Good reports from others I have talked to as well. Letting the engines have their say cannot be underestimated in my book, and it was amazing how quiet the airfield was during their performances. The only gripe I had about the day was a certain aircraft doing its run up right in front of the crowd during the whole routine of the one of the Corsair or mustang routines, which pissed the crowd right off. Maybe have the next aircraft hold away from the crowd? I would rather hear the sound of round over a lycoming anyday.

How wonderful to see Les Munro in that shot.
Someone mentioned he said he'd flown the Mosquito with No. 617 Squadron. I never knew this - I had searched through all his ops in the No. 617 Squadron Operations Record Book which is online and didn't see any involving the Mossie so he must have flown it in training and local flying duties rather than ops. But if I'd have known I'd have invited him to the Ardmore event.

When I spoke with him in the VIP area he indicated that he had only flown a couple of hours on conversion but not any sort of ops because he wanted to fly one. To think that he was able to fly over Wellington in it was truely amazing.

Whooooosh! Sharks Dave Phillips talks with WWII Mosquito veteran and forum friend John Beeching under the Mossie's wing Absolute legends! Left to right we have John Saunders on the edge of the photo, and under the Mosquito's wing are Frank Parker, Keith Skilling, Gavin Trethewey, and Gene de Marco in one group, and further along John Beecjing, Dave Phillips and Stu Goldspink on another. How good is that? A lightened version of the same shot so you can see detail:

The guy at the end of the row is Graeme Wood who normally flies Tiger Moth ZK-BLI and the Warbirds Beaver. The young woman is usually pearched on the top wing of ZK-BLI and performs the wing walking routine with Graeme at airshows.Looks like a hot day!
