This was taken during the first pass of Dave's last display and I put the camera down and just took it all in after taking this photo. Everyone that has posted pics of the Mosquito have recorded some of what we saw for everyone here to enjoy. At times as we know staring through a view finder is not the same experience, as standing there watching so thanks to all who have taken time to post photos.

Lovely angle and timing of the shot Gavin. Having the viewing area laid out as it was in an "L" shape, meant the pilots were encouraged to perform light and tight banking manoeuvres to allow this type of shot. Thanks for this unique angle and the clarity of the shot

Masterton must be the best place in New Zealand to have an airshow. Firstly the sun is at your back during the afternoon and using the two runways as the display line allows the aircraft to turn during the run. It makes any aircraft look good, as you can get an over the wing shot. I dont think anyone overseas will better your photos of the Mosquito taken in New Zealand, thanks to everyone.

Omaka has pretty much exactly the same features as Masterton, sun to back, and curved display line and slightly less changeable weather. I'm just biased I guess being from the South Is and all.

At times as we know staring through a view finder is not the same experience, as standing there watching so thanks to all who have taken time to post photos. I took about fifty photographs on the Friday, about 1200 photographs on the Saturday, then only about 100 on the Sunday. I mostly just watched on Sunday because I didn't want to only see the Mosquito, the Anson, and those amazing formations through a viewfinder. However, when the balbo flypast came through at the end of the airshow on the Sunday, I picked up the camera again and shot off about 10 photographs.

Everyone, thanks for the comments ref the commentary and Zac I do know what you mean. After every show I ask how I can get better info across or improve the delivery. Dave H knows this as we talked at length after the Ardmore Mossie display. No-one in the commentary team ever knows how it went unless we get feedback and I am always looking to improve. So, apart from obtaining dual citizenship - which due to the number of trips I do over the ditch is on the cards - I would appreciate any feedback, comments you may wish to make...... and I have a skin like a rhino so I do not get offended. Any comments on here or as PMs greatly appreciated.

Check you PMs. I'd be happy to listen to you and the Pom at any air show!
I'll bet the Avalon Show won't be as good by comparison, and I'll be there!

Airshow was great as was the commentary. Ben's commentary on the RNZAF was good and really enjoyed Sara Randle's commentary due to her exceptional knowledge of the aeroplanes.

My goodness, Matt and Gavin you really are spoiling us now with these superb photos. How is it that every airshow you guys get better and better? Wonderful stuff.
Ando, the only thing I heard, from a learned friend on this very forum who I was with at the time, is the story of the evolution of the Mustang from Allison to Merlin that was told by either you or Trevor (I can't recall who it was now) is apparently an often trotted out inaccuracy. It might need checking.
I still have some more photos to come, when I get time.

Dave,
Thanks for that. Trevor was quoting from the Rolls Royce publication regarding the company's modifications of a couple of RAF Allison Mustangs and the trans-Atlantic transfer of the test data that led to NA producing the P-51B. I shall drag out my copy and check what it says. There is a lot of "chicken and egg" there with numerous American manuscripts putting the US programme ahead of the UK work. Again, I shall check and ensure the data is correct. On another note I would like to thank everyone who has sent PMs to me regarding the commentary. It shall all be used to improve the'product' and the delivery.

I enjoyed the commentary, I thought you guys did a good job - I'm always a bit nervous when it starts because I've been subjected to some truly horrendous "commentary" at airshows before. Best of all, thankyou for recognising when it's appropriate to stop talking and let the engines tell the story!

(With a Spitfire prop and large intake under the nose bit like a P40) Does this mean the US were already trialing the Mustang with a Merlin in the US as well?

I have seen a number of magazine articles generated from the USA which indicated that NAA were looking at the Merlin and had done some 'significant' research into its potential use in the Mustang prior to RAF/Rolls Royce. Despite all my efforts over many years I have never been able to ferret out this 'significant' research and I believe it is a bastardisation of badly researched facts that have been continued as urban myth. I shall admit that I may be wrong in decrying these articles (I'll now have to dig them out sometime) but the mass of historical record is in favour of RAF/Rolls Royce

I have one of the books done about the P51 history (1980s? and not sure where it was written) and it basically talked about the Rolls conversion and I don't recall a US connection til the results were shared.
