I believe that the organisers have planned something very special for DH enthusiasts that is supposed to run for approx one hour....... very well worth while being there just for that ! So, Dave, organising a meeting at a Masterton waterhole?

Would be interesting having the DH bi-planes up at the same time as the Vampire and Mosquito- I suppose we could go past at full power/90kts and they could fly past us at their stall speed?
Blimey, hope I haven't given away a secret...

I can remember the Spitfire Mk.XVI and the Sopwith Camel doing a couple of flypasts in close formation at Warbirds over Wanaka a few years ago. The Sopwith Camel was flat-out and I imagine the Spitfire's stall-warning horn would have been sounding....it was flying at a fairly high angle of attack alongside the Camel. Spectacular stuff though. I've got some photographs stashed away on a hard-drive somewhere.

The Spitfire and Camel flypast was considered extreme edge display flying as far as I have read - I doubt you'd see that with 16 or so different types all at different speeds though. It would be great if it did happen.
Ando, regarding the watering hole, dunno. I don't even know if I am going to the airshow. I don't know Masterton at all, so you'll have to ask someone else about the best place to meet up.

I have been invited by management, who will provide a ticket and acom if I can make it, it's just the getting there that I am trying to sort out. I remember the Camel and Spitfire formation, it was 2004. We watched them go up with a Squirrel camera helicopter on the Friday.

That remains one of my favourite Wanaka displays to this day! Some of the best flying I have seen and really showed how quickly aviation advanced in the short time between WW1 and WW2. If I'm not mistaken, the air-to-air footage as seen in the official dvd was flown by Gene de Marco (Camel) and Nigel Lamb (Spitfire) before Lee Proudfoot took over the Spitfire duties for the airshow flypast. Very skilful flying by all three- in two classic British icons- great shape and sound! And to cap it off, once the formation broke, Lee powered the Spitfire back-up and returned to perform an impromptu Spitfire display- magical!

Well, it looks like I am all sorted now, and should definately be attending this airshow. I am looking forward to it. Great stuff, and many thanks to Bruce and Tom. As for the forum meet pub, Bruce who's a local has suggested the Horseshoe Restaurant & Bar. He says it has a really nice restaurant, but also a sports bar where you can order counter meals. www.thehorseshoe.co.nz/How does that sound?

Hmmm, do we have any Forum paraphernalia to wear - hats etc?? So we can recognise one another apart from the lot that are going to wear WOW hats!!

Thanks Errol, I'll do just that as I have one or two holders even here at home, and some at work I'm sure. Also cheap

Its funny that there is mention of the organisers of the airshow setting up something special DH wise. As the operator of one of the largest collections of DH aircraft around, I haven't heard anything regarding a request for aircraft. Having said that it may have gone past me also. I will check when I am on deck again on Monday. Maybe they don't require our services??

Does anybody know if the Mossie will be flying on the practice day on Friday? It's the only day that I can attend due to other committments.

According to the airshow website, gates open at 12pm on the Friday with informal practise displays until 5.30pm. An evening show will then commence at 5.30pm with the Mosquito featuring. As with all airshows, it does say that the Friday programme is subject to change due to weather and operational requirements. www.wings.org.nz/docs/print_programme__friday.pdf

My sister won a free double pass to the show but, as she has no real interest in flying, she gave them to Sam and I! We will likely be there for the Saturday only, hope to see some of you there!

It's perfect airshow weather in Waiirarapa this weekend.
Mostly blue skies (some cloud around but it is really high), gentle breezes and very warm temperatures.
Fingers crossed that this weekend's weather repeats in a fortnight's time.
