I have a vague recollection that Dave Dilks was related to Snow Hall, his son-in-law perhaps? Also wasn't Dave building a hovercraft to be powered by a Rover gas turbine that he had brought back from Cranwell? As a slight variation away from strictly aircraft I thought we might have bit of a nostalgia trip for people like Canberra and 14liney. Taken at RAF Tengah we start with the swimming pool, site of some memorable 14 Sqdn happy hours. The trick was to fit a Canberra with the luggage pannier in the bomb bay, load it up with cans of (duty free) beer and then send it away on a hi level navex timed to land just prior to the happy hour start. As soon as it landed the cans would be whisked away down to the pool and the party would start. Best beer cooler ever! Tengah Pool by Neville Mines, on Flickr Next shot is our accomodation on Vanguard 9, Cheshire Block where we had the second floor. Cheshire Block by Neville Mines, on Flickr and finally for this lot a shot of Tengah Village which was just a couple of hundred metres from the main gate. At night this part was the home of the food stalls and their great keema curries. Tengah Village by Neville Mines, on Flickr

re- earlier photo of the parade at Ohakea, it might have been for this guy: Dean Rusk. The RNZAF Officer on the right is Wg Cmdr Peart, Allan Peart's brother.

Thanks Phil, 14liney also confirmed it was Dean Rusk and he has some 8mm footage of the parade.

Thought I would do three more nostalgia shots of Tengah before going back to aircraft. I also thought it might be an idea to post the odd general interest/nostalgia shot to invoke memories for those who were there and to give those who weren't some idea of what the "grim digs" are talking about in conversations they might get involved in. This time we have a photo of the McGregor Club (commonly known as "Mac's Caf), there was one of these on each RAF base and they had similar facilities to the YMCA on our bases. McGregor Club,RAF Tengah by Neville Mines, on Flickr Then a shot from the first floor balcony of Mac's looking down to the main gate with the Provost section on the left and Admin on the right. Just visible between the provost section and the fence (behind the tree) is the gate guardian, a Meteor NF 14 (more of that later) Gate from Mac's Caf by Neville Mines, on Flickr Final shot is our favourite on base watering hole, the Malcolm Club, situated, more or less, between the back of the provosts and the swimming pool. Those photos of Tengah are interesting for me, someone who'd never been there but heard a number of stories about the place. Nice to see what it looked like. Cheers.

Shorty these are slides aren't they? I only ask as Pete Tolhoek was wondering what to get to scan his slides. Check out my RNZAF and Civilian aircraft thread this weekend for some Pete photos!

I have the constructor/owner of CWG as G McNichol, Taradale from 1968 thru 1976, I L Cameron & A H Klenner, Kapuni 1976-78, I L Cameron, M A Farr & B R Corbett, Hawera 1978 - 92. No mention of Merv Meredith? Interestingly enough, it was cancelled in 1992 as 'Whereabouts unknown'!. They couldn't find it? With a colour scheme like that?

You would be right with Greg McNichol,I think they were both in the same AACA chapter It's been some 40 years since I was involved in the AACA and the memory must be playing tricks with me. My apologies for trying to mislead you!

Nice to see that Lodestar, that's a type that has not featured too highly on the forum and in the history books, espeically the Fieldair ones. I wish I could have seen one flying back in the day.

"I have a vague recollection that Dave Dilks was related to Snow Hall, his son-in-law perhaps? Also wasn't Dave building a hovercraft to be powered by a Rover gas turbine that he had brought back from Cranwell?" I don't know about those things Shorty. I do remember that before he was commissioned he used to play in a band with Dave Rose and couple of other guys whose names escape me right now. Used to play quite a bit in the base Institute. "As a slight variation away from strictly aircraft I thought we might have bit of a nostalgia trip for people like Canberra and 14liney." Excellent photos Shorty although those happy hours and visits to the Malcolm Club (my favourite) and Mac's Cafe are somewhat blurred for some reason. On Vanguard 7 we were billeted in Learoyd Block which was next to the Javelin Squadron (60?) and close to the end of the runway. Really noisy especially when the Lightings of 74 Sdn were taking off with afterburners. I took all that footage of the Javelins from the balcony. Here is the link that I posted on Canberras in RNZAF Service Check this link for some other Tengah photos www.singas.co.uk/HTML/tengah.html

All the other Vanguards I went on we were in Learoyd, like you said, pretty noisy. Night flying by Lightnings was a great reason to go to town for some peace and quiet (grin) Have lots of photos of aircraft taken from the roof of Learoyd which I'll post later

Shorty, would I be right in saying ,that this would be a typical scenario of the era: Baggies standing, or sitting around with hands in pockets while the SNCO's in dust coats, and Officers had done the official ok, for the workers to do their thing
