Super photos Nev, the coloured early Skyhawk shots are great, and the Blunty unpacking photos are really interesting and possibly unique.

Back at post #433 I put up a shot of a Sea Vixen from HMS Eagle taxying in at Ohakea and I mentioned that I couldn't find any photos of the Buccaneers, well, I just came across some on a strip of negative. scan0163 by Neville Mines, on Flickr scan0162 by Neville Mines, on FlickrIMG]http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk201/crumples_bucket/scan0161.jpg[/IMG] scan0161 by Neville Mines, on FlickrI'll have some more of Eagle's aircraft later on in the thread.

There has been quite a few Avenger photos being posted lately so I thought I'd add a couple. I haven't put them in the MOTAT thread as this one has nothing to do with them. This is NZ 2505 in the late 60s when it was sitting on the foreshore at Opunake Beach, prior to going to Silverstream NZ 2505 Opunake by Neville Mines, on Flickr NZ 2505 Opunake a by Neville Mines, on Flickr and a final shot of Bennets where it had come from. Interesting. Who owned it when it was at Opunake Beach? Note the bold US markings on it, and a nose art of some sort. Also that propeller doesn't look quite right, does it? ;D

It was placed in the kids playground there by the Jaycees or Rotary or the Lions, one of those sort of organisations. I reckon the prop was Vildie or Vincent

Great photos Shorty, I remember now, the engine from the Rotorua one was taken out by John Regan sometime before Motat got it. The engine was for the one you show which as you say went to Silverstream. When we got the Rotorua one it had the wooden prop which I also think was a Vilde. mounted on a made up plate to look real.

These photos from the collection are a bit of a mystery to me. Can anyone help with identity? 1st one is, what was the name of the 14 Squadron monkey seen in this well known shot of it sitting on a Venom tailplane? scan0118 by Neville Mines, on Flickr 2nd one. Who are these guys, where, when,Squadron? I'm assuming they're ours and not Yanks (no cigars!!). Looks a bit posed to me. scan0131 by Neville Mines, on Flickr 3rd question where is this and what is going on? Is it a hand over or two units stationed there both having their individual flag raising? The RNZAF types on parade just seem to be officers (they are wearing sidearms) with the baggies lurking in the background. whereas the USN types (Seabees?)seem to be enlisted men (judging by their headwear} Where by Neville Mines, on Flickr Ventura Cockpit by Neville Mines, on Flickr

That cockpit looks a little Douglas like. trying to count all those flipping throttles, mixture and prop levers it looks to be a four engined aircraft. DC-6? Or is it an early Connie?

I thought Douglas put their logo on their rudder pedals? Not really sure on that. I reckon it's 4 engine also and I suspect it's a transport type as ther'e no way past to nose positions unless there was some sort of access under the pilots floor. The photo came from the same guy as had the pilots photo. I've had a look here: uscockpits.com/ and can't find a match.

I think it is a twin - piston engined aircraft, the way the multitude of levers are arranged doesnt suggest 4 engines. (you should have Throttles, Mixture, Prop, and Carb heat Which would give 8 levers, plus some spares for flaps etc). As a random guess I'm thinking Twin Pioneer, but really cant be sure at all!

and finally what is this the cockpit off? It doesn't seem to have the usual British "T" layout of flight instruments. Unless it is prior to that being standardised (when was that). I thought it looked a little familiar, so I dug through what I have and came up with this..................... ...........which is a damaged picture I have of a Ventura cockpit, the throttle quadrant and panel arrangement looks awfully familiar. So I did abit more digging on the web and came up with these from the NMUSAF site................................. B-34 (US Airforce) PV-1 (US Airforce) ........and from the US Cockpit site. Lodestar uscockpits.com/Cargo/C-60A%20Lodestar.jpgSo I am calling Lockheed twin.

I reckon you're right with Ventura. I had previosly discounted it based on what I had seen of the aircraft at Russ's place, but of course, thats a RB 34 with the glass nose, not a proper solid nosed Ventura. Also it's the right vintage with the rest of the photos from that album.
Now onto the other two questions. :-)

While people are searching their memories for the answers to thw two remaining questions I'll post a definite. This is the Auckland Museum's Zero (NZ 6000) as it was displayed in the late 60's in a spurious two tone camouflage pattern(WHAT were they thinking?). Also visible is the V1 which had also fallen prey to the camouflage painter. scan0016 by Neville Mines, on Flickr scan0018 by Neville Mines, on Flickr scan0022 by Neville Mines, on Flickr

AQccording to ADF serials (where I looked the number up from) both aircraft went to NZNAC Technical Training School at Christchurch. So which is which?

NZ1044 started out with NAC then ended up with Air New Zealand(in Christchurch as NAC had ceased to be.) NZ1041 started out with Air New Zealand and was in Auckland before coming down to ANZ Christchurch(late 1980s early 1990s) and John Saunders getting her(and she now lives at Omaka).
