Thought I would try a post on here in case there are some new (or even current) members on here who might be able to help. I'm looking to find any (more) photos of my Auster either with the Canterbury Aero Club or later on with the Auckland Flying School. A few have turned up from members on here which will be very helpful come painting time. I'm also seeking her earlier logbooks (yeah really reaching here)as I only have the last one. And any stories anyone may have who may have either flown in or flown her either as a student or just flying for fun. (I sometimes wonder if the chap who had her last flight is still around??)

I know someone from ChCh who did flying lessons back 32 years ago and possibly flew in her. I'll get in contact - still in ChCH I think. She had photos from inside planes as well. Probably just the view... What years in Canterbury Aero Club?

32 years ago isn't far enough Graeme, 1981 is the era of the Piper Cherokee for the CAC. BBZ was operated with the club from May 1953 til going to the Auckland Flying School in February 1964. I was flying with the club in 1981 and got my PPL completed that year.

Ok - different period LOL! Sounds like you were doing your lessons about the same time as my friend. It was a young woman by the name of Jo Fox... I think she learned some aerobatics as well - or at least wanted to fly a higher performance plane like a Pitts Special...

I'm not sure. I saw the whole family New Year 2011 but never had time to ask - I was interested then too. I'll get in touch. I think she got her PPL before she was 18.

Baz, I think you already have the answer. You know enough of the history of BBZ to get it going and be your flying machine. Now every man needs a project..... an old beat up aircraft that can sit at the back of the hangar and he can prattle on about it. Show the Manufacturer's plate, show all the original logbooks, dating back to the UK and possibly a little Aussie stuff. The accidents can be reviewed and discussed, over a beer or three if need be. So the flying machine sits there, either being used or ready for the next mission. We don't need valuable historical waffle anywhere near this machine, afterall it is off flying any minute. Now the sociable machine is a different story. It sits there next to the seats and beer fridge at the back of the hangar. This is where the real business is done and the library is there where all manner of good gen can be thrown about. The good thing about all this.... it is free ! You have already paid for it all. Well apart from the beer I deserve for reminding you about the stuff we brought back from up North.

Some of her history is coming to light in a personal way for one chap. Anthony got a customer in who was getting new glasses and of course he spied a photo Anthony has of his Auster. Turned out the customer's first ever flight was in the 1950s in an Auster. Best thing was he had photos of it at home but he knew the registration. It was BBZ! He has very kindly made copies of them which I now have so I'll post them once I've scanned them.

Funnily enough the chap I bought BBZ off used to own BMD. Then lost his medical and sold it. And another connection to my previous Auster MK 5 AUH. BMD was restored while owned by Charlie Ensor who I bought AUH off! Incidently BMD has a wing off one of the RNZAF J5 Austers.

When in its history did it get Lycomingised or was that from new?
Was once owned/operated by the late Gus Pyper towing banners over Wellington - watching him "pick up" the banner off the ground was interesting to say the least.
Mentioned a lot in the early chapters of Barry Cardno's book "Let Fly"

Lycoming fitted 1980 while with A C Christoffels & J J van Giels, Timaru.
I don't have Pyper listed as an owner of ZK-BMD Tom. Are you thinking of 5D ZK-BGU? Pyper owned that one 1979/1980.

I learnt to fly tailwheel in BMD, love that aeroplane. If I had the spare cash I would by her in a heart beat.
