From Windsock Datafile #4 "The colour profile portrays Bristol F2B E2262 of No.39 Squadron, RAF, late 1918, based at North Weald in Essex. The unusual fuselage and fin markings are fully described on pages 18 & 19 - colours of large letter and numeral are conjectural being based on tonal values only." Pages 18 & 19 have several close-up b&w photos of the various markings. No.39 Squadron were a home defence squadron, and as they did not move to France until October 1918 they were too late to see action on the front line.

39 Home Defence Sqn has a distinguished history; our very own Alfred de Bathe Brandon served with 39 Sqn whilst it was based at Hainault Farm in 1916, along with William leefe Robinson, who shot down the first airship (SL 11) over Britain in September, Freddy Sowrey and Wulstan tempest, who shot down Zeppelins that year. The unit went to France with F.E.2bs as a bomber unit in October 1918. On the night of 19/20 May 1918, Lt A.J. Arkell and 1st AM A.T.C. Stagg in Bristol Fighter C4636, coded A6 (also as E2262 above, although the former was powered by an RR Falcon)of 39 Sqn shot down a Gotha G V bomber, one of three on that night - a fourth crashed without assistance in Britain. Anti aircraft guns claimed a few too, although these crashed in the sea. There were 38 Gothas and three Riesenbombers on that raid.

Can someone please enlighten me as to the different engine radiator shapes seen on various F2bs?
The TVAL one shown in this thread (in France) has a radiator with rounded corners with straight sides. On the other hand, it seems that all the photos I see on the net for the Bristol F2b show a more circular radiator. I'm assuming it depends on the type of engine used, and perhaps the circular radiator was fitted to those with the RR engine.
What’s the story, Trev?

You got it. F2bs were fitted with a number of different engines, the 285 hp Falcon III, or 253 hp Falcon II, or 230 hp Falcon I, 150, 180, 200 and 300 hp Hispano Suiza V8, 200 hp Sunbeam Arab V8, 180 hp R.A.F.4d V12 or 236 hp Siddeley-Deasy Puma straight 6. The straight edged radiator was commonly fitted to the Hisso and copies, such as the woeful Arab, which was an attempt to build a Hisso substitute, but it suffered terribly from vibration and the Wolesley Viper, which sought to rectify the issues suffered by both the Hisso and the Arab and was the engine the Hisso should have been. The second prototype of the F2b had a 150 hp Hisso, but was fitted with what looks like the circular radiator.

^ Thanks Nuuumannn. I think the Hispano Suiza radiator looks nicer than the more usual RR one.

The SE.5a is the Jack Kearbey-built former N125QB. Here is a David Whitworth photograph of it at Shuttleworth recently: As for the Snipe, I was told the most recent TVAL Snipe (ZK-SBY) is destined for Poland. I don't know if this is true, or whether I was being wound up.

On the port side of that Snipe , just below the cockpit sill is the word EXPERIMENTAL which is possibly an indication that this aircraft is going to the USA ?

Not necessarily, it would be in the NZ Special Category - Experimental during its test phase here in NZ - Which means it is not allowed to carry passengers!

Good to see that the German aircraft, built in New Zealand for a Dubai resident, is nearly ready for the 'Best of Britain' airshow this weekend. I wonder if the pilot will be an American?
