A couple from the Friday night MkXIV Spitfire just after arrival Anson crossing the moon. And a few from today (Saturday) Out with the old... in with the new Everybody out! Here's something you don't see every day... Apologies for not making it to the forum meet. Our accom was out past Picton and by the time I got the family back there through traffic and fed and watered after the show, it just wasn't going to work out to come back in to Blenheim. Hope it all went well.

I know what a V1 is, but what is this thing at Omaka? Nice photos but it's hard to figure out what it is. When I say it, is it just the same one or is there more than one?

I know what a V1 is, but what is this thing at Omaka? Nice photos but it's hard to figure out what it is. When I say it, is it just the same one or is there more than one? There are external mock-ups that get blown up. There is one RC-controlled flyer that is launched from the rail and powered by small electric fans. It is quite controllable, and was launched directly into the decent wind (assume crosswind launch would flip it). Lands on it's belly at low speed. Movement looks great, and dynamic, if not realistic as a V-1.

Thanks Dave for organizing the meet-up last night, thanks John for the venue, and nice of the Auster guys for coming along as well.
Several good Auster tales were told, and I met Shorty for the first time,
That has to be another tick off the bucket list.

Bristol Freighter just did its lunch-time taxi. We had drizzle for a while at the start of lunch, seems to have stopped for now. Had full WWI scenario with 10 or so aircraft up.
Had the 3 Spits do a pass early in the show, great!

The best part of this years show: - the eight Triplane formation Sunday morning - the Bristol Freighter engine runs.
The not-so-good parts: - the very slow reaction of the emergency services to the FW190 incident. If there had been a fire involved they would have been way too late. - the dreadful din eminating from the sound stage prior to the fireworks display Friday evening. Real head-thumping stuff, bad enough to drive us away prior to the pyrotechnics.
All in all, a jolly good effort.

This has without doubt been a fantastic airshow, and I'd say the best yet that I have been to of any airshows (or on a par with the Sept 29th 2012 Mosquito airshow for absolute coolness!!)

For me , I would certainly include in " Best parts "list - The Saturday display of the MK14 Spitfire ( unfortunatly I wasnt in the stands for it , and it wasnt repeated on Sunday , but it looked excellent) - The V1 flying . It was a short display , but I liked it a lot . As for the " not so good " parts - The reaction of the emergency crew to the FW190 did seem to take a long time , also to the grass fire on Saturday ( although I do understand that they cant just just rush out on to the airfield before other , still airbourne aircraft have been warned ) - As far as that " Dreadful din " goes , I quite liked that . It must be very difficult to fill that time between 'too dark to fly ' , but ' not dark enough for fireworks ' . I think the concert worked well and I would have rather watched that than sat there doing nothing .( just my opinion ) - Im going to mention the Gold Pass toilets here . They were great , but a little cramped and access was up a narrow , steep set of steps that didnt really suit the needs of many of the older folks that like to sit in the stands . Just minor things , overall I think it was the best show yet , well done everybody involved !

A video of the V1 final day of build and a test flight with fixed temporary U/C and finally a test flight on the bungi ramp and very smooth belly landing w/o u/c.
It seems well balanced and smooth once in the air. Apparently there is very little directional control for wheeled takeoff as the "prop wash" (5 engine) flue stream does not impinge on the control surfaces.

There was no need for the emergency crash/fire [RNZAF from Woodbourne incidentally] to attend the grass fire, because it was very quickly under control by people with back-pack water sprays rural fire service style. There were also two water spray trucks from somewhere, so why commit the only major fire vehicle when there were aircraft still in the air? As for the show, :absolutely brilliant! Lots of Aussies in the wine tent!The show, the friendly atmosphere of everyone you met, the crowd in the Gold Stand, those toilets, the bacon sandwich I had for lunch, and the Chathams Air flight there and back from Wellington,[ a birthday present to me from Mumbles], all contributed to a brilliant day!
