This is a very good thing. For both morale and capability, and the chance to train pilots properly. I'm sure the airacraft is a performer in its oen right (power to weight similar to an early Spitfire?), but it ain't a jet. Flew the PC9 from the front seat once and was struck by the 'civvy' feel of it-low wing-loading and slow. I'm sure the Texan II is a long way from the PC9 and a very positive step for the RNZAF, and probably the biggest step, in terms of high performance small machines, that was politically tenable.
I'm on the side of 'it certainly ain't pretty' , but neither was the Strikemaster!

Next 3 on their way. t6tonz.wordpress.com/2014/11/10/our-next-three-are-on-their-way/The next three T-6C Texan II aircraft have started their journey to Base Ohakea, New Zealand. The three aircraft departed Des Moines for Canada on 10 November 2014. On board two of the aircraft are two RNZAF pilots. This is the first ferry flight that has been conducted with our own pilots. Wow, it sounds very impressive in that valley. Sounds like the Air Force has its balls back.

But it's got more performance than a Spitfire...

While those on civvy street are doing their PPL on a Cessna 152, our boys and girls in blue are starting their flying life in one of these. At least before you flew a Harvard 70 years ago you went solo in a Tigermoth, if nothing else that way is cheaper when a landing is made from a great height, and not enough on the clock to go round again, or are we keeping something like a few Air Trainers for that part of the training? isc

That's OK in theory beagle, but when you stuff up in the simulator, you just do it again, and hope you get it right, when you do it for real, you just hope you can walk away, and it gives the mechs something to do. isc

Not a big fan of simulation , reckon its only good for some very basic, initial tasks, but i suppose if you continually stuff up on a simulator, probably wise not to progress.

Nice wee video. Just for clarification purposes, these flybys at Milford were back in 2012 when Beechcraft Raytheon had demo example N3000B in the country coinciding with the RNZAF 75th anniversary Airshow at Ohakea and then soon after Warbirds over Wanaka.
Must have been a buzz for those watching, and more so for the passenger of the Texan who I'm sure was a guest of the manufacturer!

Don't underestimate the benefits of simulation; give or take the fidelity of the simulator.
isc: the RAAF does all-through training on the PC9, no?

Don't the RAAF pilots first go to the BAe School and train there on the ex-RAAF and ex-RNZAF Airtrainers before they go onto the PC9?
