I've have you know that an Auster came third in the short take-off and landing competition (held over two days) at Warbirds Over Wanaka, beating meany aeroplanes only a fraction its age.
I bet Baz's chest swelled with pride too when the final results were announced today!!

Awesome show. Not so good points: Martin Jet pack didn't fly with a pilot, apparently due to paperwork issues with the parachute system not being certified yet, and didn't fly at all Sunday due to mechanical issue. (Will it ever fly?) NH90 didn't fly on sunday due to being "out of hours". Cover story perhaps? I mean it isn't like they didn't see this coming and plan accordingly? C-17, i feel for the crew, a lot of flying to get here to do what amounts to about 5 passes down the strip per day. Can i request, several formations were only held for one pass, can you make it two next time? (one to photograph, one to watch!) examples to mind were the Cat & 2x DC3, and the 9x Yak52. A certain commentator. Annoys me, and it seemed everyone around me, with inane babble. Don't leave unnecessary equipment, like tow tractors, parked between the crowd line and the aircraft! Good points: The Cat, looks awesome and performed just as well. Credit to all involved. (I heard a rumour she's noticeably lighter after having all the old paint layers removed!) Fri Night at the lake was awesome, I can't believe how many people were there for it. Bigger and better next time? Hell, hold the whole show here. (Although i admit there might be a funding issue to work around here...) Good to see and hear the Mustang pair. The whole event (from an "ice cream licker" p.o.v just seemed pretty well organised, plenty of toilets, food, parking appeared to go well etc. And, of course, the Buchon, and John Romain: Awesome. So well flown and displayed (for those not there, i'd describe it as along the lines of Sean in PV270 - very smooth and fluid, no aileron rolls or loops, but very pleasant to watch). Thank you so much for coming all this way to display.

A wonderful review, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts.
Given the Buchon and Catalina's presence I may buy the DVD this year!

Was that ZK-BAH?
That's unfortunate, as it's been back in the air for less than a month since wing repair & general tidy-up work was completed by JEM Aviation.

I see the video clip was uploaded to YouTube on 26th March (Saturday), yet from the look of the place (empty grandstands) it would have had to have occurred well after the airshow finished on one of the days, as there are always a handful lingerers in the stands for quite some considerable time afterwards. It was bright and sunny following the airshow on Saturday, so the incident must have occured prior to that, either late on Friday, or more likely, late on Thursday.
Anyway, I'm off over the Haast Pass to Jackson Bay for lunch at The Craypot, where they have the freshest, yummiest seafood you can imagine. I'll be back in Wanaka later this afternoon after covering a few hundred k's round trip. Flying home (Queenstown to Wellington, then by train to Wairarapa) tomorrow.

bugger but good to hear everyone is safe looks like 1057? www.stuff.co.nz/southland-times/news/78306480/two-people-believed-to-be-uninjured-in-plane-crash-at-wanaka-airportEmergency services have arrived at a plane crash at Wanaka Airport involving an aircraft believed to have taken part in the Warbirds Over Wanaka event. It is believed two people were uninjured in the crash, which happened during an attempt to takeoff in a Harvard aircraft. Fire fighters from Luggate and Wanaka were responding to the callout but it was not believed the aircraft caught fire. A fire spokesman confirmed they were in attendance, but referred all question to police. Warbirds Over Wanaka general manager Ed Taylor said it was thought the incident resulted from a mechanical fault with a wheel. Thousands of people turned out for the three-day Warbirds show, which finished on Sunday.

, which happened during an attempt to takeoff in a Harvard aircraft. Photo caption says landing. Shame but looks repairable and no one is hurt.

Love that tight shot of the 109's cockpit, gee they have an industrial look about them, can't imagine it would have been much fun getting out of one when it was on fire!
