Unfortunately I think the chances are close to zero... the current Govt clearly will put defence investment into a holding pattern while it goes off on it's promised 'review' (which may simply dumb down their 'purpose' in order to be able to afford to make them 'fit for purpose'. That'll definitely push major acquisition decisions such as extra P8 out beyond 2025. www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/129205565/government-to-review-defence-policy-amid-covid19-geopolitical-competition-climate-changeIf (when?) Govt changes next year, the 'other party' will be on a hunt for substantial spending cuts so if you think for a moment they'll splash P8 sized cash then, well.... The key here is all along the EMAC project was touted as adding a 2nd tier patrol, reconn capability to free up the P8 to focus on core military tasks... that will still be, and should still remain, the primary strategy. Move SAR & fishery patrol etc off the P8. The money for 1 extra P8 could get you 3-4 2nd tier MPA depending on what the platform ended up being... especially as it has been stated it would be an unarmed capability...even possibly not NZDF owned / operated... including satellites. So given EMAC looks to have gone suspiciously quiet in the last 3 years I doubt that'll happen... so an extra P8 (or 2) whilst ideal, clearly won't be on the cards. 'Big drones' would also be a great move but they would be probably more expensive than extra P8 due to the duplication of support structures required. Some years back I read a US article showing drones took as many aircrew to operate and were ultimately cost slightly more than equivalent fixed-wing capability to operate.

C17 fiasco all over again wonder if boeing will build some white tails I think the queue for Wedgetails is longer, so the limited B737NG airframes will be in demand there. Converting to P-8s is more expensive than final fit-out of a C-17.

First aircraft RNZAF P-8 left the paint shop in Seattle, looking smart as On Monday, there are 100 working days to go until she lands at Base Ohakea. It’s getting real very soon !

Question: Why is it that the "Royal New Zealand Air Force" script that featured on Dakotas, Devons, Hastings, Hercules etc, doesn't appear on Sunderlands, Orion, nor the Poseidon now?

Now all it needs is the mission systems installed and it will be ready to go, on track for Dec 13 delivery to Ohakea.

Any interesting choice of serial number range "NZ48" the next series available in the NZ4xxx range was NZ43. However, I guess the choice of NZ48xx is a play to the designation of the aircraft being a P8. Similar choices have existed before with the F27 NZ27xx, B727 NZ72xx and B757 NZ75xx

The depiction of the albatross on the tail was approved by me when the P3's changed from the original scheme to the all grey. I wrote a change to the policy for "combat" aircraft which stated that they could carry the squadron crest (centre image) in a toned down form on the fin in lieu of the fin flash. The reason being that the squadron crest is unique to the RNZAF owned aircraft whereas the fin flash on the tail and being the last item to arrive at a crash site and usually surviving was the same style as the RAF one.

I made a comment here in jest but it sparked off political debate that was unintended and off-topic. I have therefore removed a few posts that had nothing to do with the P-8 topic.
By the way, I think the thing being referred to here as the "squadron crest" should actually be referred to as the squadron badge?
