Only 3 Whippets were built in 1919. Five were built. Source: Jackson, A J "British Civil Aircraft since 1919, Volume 1 - page 89/90UK CAA record card for Whippet G-EAPF showing it was still active in the late 20s - early 30s The Whippet was covered briefly in 1971 and 1972 journals of the AHSNZ. Much later, an excellent 14-page article on the Whippet by Phil Jarrett was published in the February 1986 issue of WW1 Aero - The Journal of the early aeroplane. A further article on the Whippet was published in the June 2014 issue of the AHSNZ journal Aerolegacy. This features some new photographs and information but is not to the same standard or accuracy of Jarrett's. The author, Jim Stringer, seems to have been unaware of Jarrett's account and also somewhat ignorant of WWI aviation history. Errol

Here are some more photos for today... Here's a proper aeroplane! Vickers Vildebeest NZ102, I believe this was whilst it was serving with No. 1 (General Reconnaissance) Squadron An Iroquois rescuing a Fletcher. I think this is the incident that Brian Farrell talked about in his WONZ Show interview hereAnson wreckage Ansons in better days (Air Force Museum of New Zealand Official) A clipping, I guess that's the aircraft that is now ZK-JOT

Whats with the green paint on BYC? looks like house paint brushed on post - crash. I know in the airline world it is usual to paint over logos and titles after a crash so any photos dont get used by the opposition for commercial gain. Its not normal to do the whole plane though?

Maybe the paint has just worn and weathered, the dates on the back of the photos indicate three years have passed since the crash till the date the shots were taken I think.

Is that green paint scheme the same company that sponsored the previous paint scheme on Dakota ZK-AZL? Looks familiar.

Fletcher ZK-BIY crashed near Dargaville 1959.Pilot was Jim Cragg,he was badly injured and retired from flying but remained as operations manager with TATCo until he passed away in the late 1970's. The Fletcher under the helicopter maybe ZK-CFP which crashed in Northland 1968. I would suspect BYC was painted green as it was on a ridge near Hamilton,no doubt they would get tired of reports of an aircraft down in the hills,so a spot of camouflage would conceal it.James's planes were painted white,it would have stuck out like the proverbals in the hills.James's Fletchers were all parked outside during their lives, the paint never wore off them so it won't be undercoat showing through.

On the red, white and black(?)striping it clearly shows 'over' painting, particularly on the red, with brush strokes and possibly paint runs. Makes sense to 'camouflage' it against further reports, etc.

So is BYC still somewhere there, or was it recovered later?
