I have been told by a member here that his uncle apparently heard NZ broadcaster and aviator Paul Holmes state in a radio interview that he has recently purchased a Hawker Hurricane.
Does anyone know more?

He's apparently stated he will not fly again in future, because his wife won't let him. I guess after surviving three crashes, it's a wise choice.

That is fantastic news for NZ aviation history...
Paul is the Man; god bless him.
And for you that think he should not fly it perhaps you should show us all how to dance!!!
If you can drive a car you can fly a plane.

P2902 Mk.Ia Rick Roberts, Billingshurst, Sussex UK Under rebuild to flying condition. On civil register as G-ROBT. Ex pre-war 56 Sqn. Reported for sale
this is the only one I can find that is for sale apart from ones that are just bits and pieces.

I agree Simon. I have no problem if he wants to fly it too. However he has apparently stated he's giving up flying. Whether that's true or not I'm not sure. I just hope the rumour is true, as I'd hate to see the AFC machine leave NZ.
There were some who used to say Sir Tim Wallis shouldn't be allowed to fly too. Idiots!

Well, Paul Holmes's dancing ain't that flash either. Me thinks Hurricane's ignition keys should not be in his hand.

He won't be able to see over the panel, will he?
Look, if he crashes it, just think of the work it will create for someone to rebuild it! ;D

Must be P3351....mind you, imagine seeing two Hurris together at Wanaka.
Not bad for a country whose airforce never had any!

The country doesn't even have an air force that could shoot it down today either.

The country doesn't even have an air force that could shoot it down today either. Bomb it out of the sky with flights of super toting Fletchers. Paul

Me thinks Hurricane's ignition keys should not be in his hand.If he bought one he's doing us all a great service, but I do agree with your sentiments, he does'nt have the greatest flying record. What an aeroplane to own though

Not bad for a country whose airforce never had any! Actually two RNZAF squadrons operated Hurricanes in WWII, No. 486 Squadron and No. 488 Squadron. Furtheremore hundreds of Kiwis flew them both in combat and in OTU training. And P3351 was flown itself be numerous Kiwis. We never had them on strength with the RNZAF but the RNZAf certainly operated them en masse. Also, let's not get this out of proportion. This is a rumour and may not be true. When I heard it, it was third-hand. If it is true, I say good on Paul Holmes. He has the money to do such a thing, and he has a genuine and long-standing interest in vintage aviation. He has been a pilot for many many years and obviously enjoys aviation. Just because he's a public figure through broadcasting, sadly the only time we hear about his aviating is when he's had an accident. I'm sure there are many other stalwarts in vinatge and warbird aviation who are much admired who also have a number of black marks in their logbooks, but they're not so derided by the media. Give the guy a break, please. Especially until we find out if this rumour has any substance.

I flew with him years ago. The aircraft he subsequently owned was not the kind one should fly unless keeping current and have a bit of time (experience) up one's sleeve. Unfortunate mix of low time pilot and tricky aeroplane. It is important to recognise one's own limitations in aviation.
